The new NetApp solutions include the NetApp Service-Oriented Infrastructure (SOI), Data Protection as a Service (DPaaS) design guide, Backup/Recovery as a Service (BRaaS) design guide and NetApp Open Management to link IT services to NetApp's storage automation engine. Asigra Inc. is a partner for the BRaaS design guide — Asigra Cloud Backup software runs on the NetApp SOI.

Cisco certifies QLogic CNAs

Cisco Systems Inc. certified QLogic Corp.'s 8100 Series CNAs for interoperability with the Cisco Unified Computing System (UCS) platform. Cisco previously certified the 8100 for use with its Nexus 5000 FCoE switches that work with the UCS.

Quantum launches LTO-5 tape devices

Quantum Corp. rolled out LTO-5 tape autoloaders, drives and media, and initiated an early customer adoption program for LTO-5 in its Scalar tape libraries. Quantum's LTO Ultrium 5 media cartridges hold 3 TB of capacity with transfer speeds of 280 MBps, read and write compatibility with LTO-4 cartridges, and backward read compatibility with LTO-3.

Neverfail offers free vAppHA trial download

Neverfail Ltd. is offering a free trial download of Neverfail vAppHA for VMware vSphere, which protects Microsoft Exchange and SQL Server, and monitors Windows operation systems, file servers, IIS servers and custom applications. Neverfail said vAppHA includes integration with VMware vSphere, automatic switchover and protection across multiple layers.

Intel brings Atom into home, SMB devices

Intel Corp. launched its first Intel Atom platform optimized for networked home and small office/home office (SOHO) storage devices. The platform consists of D410 single-core and D510 dual-core chip configurations that run on Microsoft Corp. Windows Home Server and Linux operating systems. The new platform features six PCI Express lanes, 12 USB 2.0 ports, a port multiplier function, eSATA ports, hot plug capabilities and an integrated gigabit Ethernet MAC controller. Storage vendors that plan products based on the Intel Atom processor platform include LaCie, LG Electronics, QNAP Systems Inc., Synology America Corp. and Thecus Technology Corp.

Overland adds CTO

Overland Storage continued to revamp its management team by hiring Geoff Barrall as chief technology officer (CTO). Barrall left his previous position as CEO of Data Robotics earlier this year, and was founder of BlueArc, Data Robotics and three other companies.

Simpson Strong-Tie switches to Pillar Axiom, gets better storage utilization

Simpson Strong-Tie Company Inc. standardized its storage on the Pillar Data Systems Axiom platform and claims a 60 % utilization rate after switching from Hewlett-Packard storage. By increasing its storage utilization, the construction manufacturing company said it lowered storage costs by 38%, saving $50,000 per year in support services. Pillar's storage QoS is the basis for its Application-Aware capability that administrators can use to classify data based on business priority.

AudienceScience cuts storage requirements for VMware vSphere with 3PAR

3PAR Inc. said AudienceScience has deployed its InServ T-Class Storage Server and reduced the amount of storage capacity required to support VMware vSphere by 83%. 3PAR also said that with its thin provisioning capability, AudienceScience's utilization has gone from 50% with legacy storage to 89%.

Avere FXT Series deployed by Sony Pictures Imageworks

Avere Systems Inc. said Sony Pictures Imageworks has deployed its FXT Series NAS appliances at its Albuquerque, NM, digital animation studio. Sony uses the FXT systems to move inactive data to its mass storage systems at another location while keeping active data on an FXT cluster.
