Storage roundup: Mellanox raises revenue projection, Vembu offers StoreGrid Service Provider

Storage networking vendor Mellanox Technologies Ltd. raised its revenue, gross margin and operating expense projections for its third quarter ending Sept. 30.

Mellanox now projects record quarterly revenue in the range of $32 million to $32.5 million for last quarter vs. its previous revenue guidance of $28.5 million to $29 million. The updated third quarter revenue projection represents sequential growth of approximately 26% to 28% from the $25.3 million reported by the company in the previous quarter, and year-over-year growth of approximately 11% above the $29.14 million reported in the third quarter of 2008.

Mellanox sells InfiniBand and 10 Gigabit Ethernet (10 GbE) gear. The vendor will officially announce its earnings Oct. 21.

Vembu unveils StoreGrid backup software

Vembu Technologies Pvt. Ltd. rolled out StoreGrid Service Provider Edition 3, a version of its online backup software specifically designed for large-scale deployments. The software is targeted at Master managed service providers (MSPs), large MSPs and hosting providers. StoreGrid Service Provider Edition 3's enhanced features include clustering and load balance, hierarchical management structure, advanced reporting, Web services APIs and replication to Amazon S3.

Promise Technology's VessRAID gets VMware certification

Promise Technology Inc. said its VessRAID storage subsystem has been formally certified for interoperability with the VMware server virtualization platform. Promise claims its GreenRAID capability can save money by allowing VessRAID's scheduling features to power on from standby mode to run user-scheduled tasks such as backups and archives.

EMC to resell Precise tiering software

EMC Corp. added Precise for Storage Tiering to its EMC Select reseller program. Precise for Storage Tiering lets customers optimize flash drive deployment by monitoring transaction data and tracing transaction performance problems to physical storage devices.

NetApp unveils energy-efficient data center

NetApp opened its new energy-efficient dynamic data center located at the NetApp technology center in Research Triangle Park (RTP), N.C. The celebration also marks the 10-year anniversary of NetApp in the RTP region. The new facility expands NetApp's engineering and development efforts in the region, including furthering research initiatives to create and improve storage efficiency and cloud-enabling technologies. The new dynamic data center will enable NetApp to consolidate its engineering facilities into a global dynamic lab (GDL), and provide a highly available and redundant infrastructure for NetApp's IT operations.

Orange County Sheriff-Coroner Department picks Mimosa for e-discovery

Mimosa Systems Inc. said the Orange County Sheriff-Coroner Department has automated its email archiving and e-discovery request processes with Mimosa NearPoint. The agency, which consists of approximately 4,000 staff and more than 800 reserve personnel, claims it has reduced the time it takes for staff to respond to e-discovery requests by 70%.

F5 ARX customers validate cost of automated storage tiering

A survey by TechValidate, an independent research organization, found that 52% of IT organizations reduced their storage budget by an average of 20% or more by deploying F5 ARX file virtualization switches. The survey said 54% of IT organizations saved at least $100,000 of capital expenditure costs by deploying F5 ARX, and 53% of IT organizations using F5 ARX reported a payback period of 12 months or less.
