Panasas, Penguin partner for high-performance computing cloud

Parallel network-attached storage (NAS) vendor Panasas Inc. and Penguin Computing have combined for a parallel storage system that will power the "Penguin on Demand" (POD) high-performance cloud computing service.

POD optimizes compute resources designed specifically to make high-performance computing (HPC) available on demand. Panasas enables multiple parallel data paths between computing nodes and Panasas ActiveStor storage.

POD provides a computing infrastructure of Linux clusters with specialized hardware interconnects and software configurations tuned specifically for HPC environments. Rather than using machine virtualization, POD lets users access a server's full resources at one time to increase I/O for large HPC workloads.

Mellanox releases 40-GigE converged adapter

Mellanox Technologies Ltd. is shipping the Mellanox ConnectX-2 EN 40G converged network adapter card supporting 40-Gigabit Ethernet. ConnectX-2 EN 40G supports hardware-based I/O virtualization, including Single Root I/O Virtualization (SR-IOV) and Data Center Bridging (DCB). Mellanox's 40 Gigabit Ethernet converged network adapter solution enables FCoE deployment with T11 Fibre Channel frame encapsulation support and hardware offloads. The single port ConnectX-2 EN 40G adapter comes with one QSFP connector suitable for use with copper or fiber optic cables.

Voltaire launches SSI-compliant InfiniBand module

Voltaire Ltd. rolled out a Server System Infrastructure (SSI)-compliant 40 Gbps InfiniBand switch module for blade servers. The switch module includes 14 40-gig internal ports for server connectivity and 16 external ports for fabric connectivity. Asia supercomputer infrastructure supplier Dawning Information Industry Co. demonstrated the switch at the Intel Developer Forum in San Francisco this week.

Dot Hill offers Virtual RAID Adapter for AMD's new server chipset

Dot Hill Systems Corp. said its Virtual RAID Adapter (VRA) software is available for AMD's newest core logic chipset. The new VRA-for-motherboard solution is based on AMD's SP5100 southbridge chipset and Dot Hill's new VRA technology for enterprise servers.

SteelEye LifeKeeper help keep Alstom trains running

SteelEye Technology Inc. has teamed up with Alstom Transportation to protect mission-critical applications for its rail lines connecting central Beijing to the Olympic Centre and the Capital Airport. SteelEye's LifeKeeper will protect maintenance services that provide remote diagnostics for Alstom's trains.

LiveOffice turns to 3PAR

3PAR announced that cloud-based email archiving provider LiveOffice has saved more than $500,000 by reducing capacity requirements, administration costs, and power consumption after deploying 3PAR Utility Storage. LiveOffice said it reduced its data center footprint by 66% after replacing three legacy storage arrays with a 3PAR InServ T-Class Storage Server.

Provident Capital picks Mimosa for Exchange

Mimosa Systems said Australian investment group Provident Capital deployed Mimosa's NearPoint application for Microsoft Exchange. The vendor said Provident has reduced storage requirements by 70 percent, boosted Exchange performance, and cut email-related help desk calls by 90 percent since turning to NearPoint 10 months ago.
