VMworld 2009: Storage vendors continue product updates around VMware

SAN FRANCISCO –Following an initial wave of storage product updates in support of VMware Inc.'s vSphere 4 to open the show, storage vendors kept rolling out product upgrades throughout VMworld 2009 this week.

HP launches reference architecture for virtual desktops
Hewlett-Packard (HP) Co. launched and demonstrated a sub-$1,000 reference architecture for VMware Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) deployments.

The reference architecture for VDI is based on blade servers running LeftHand Networks' iSCSI storage-area network (SAN) storage virtualization software on SAS disks.

HP also added a SAN Readiness assessment, support for StorageWorks Command View EVA in a virtual appliance and official support for VMware's vStorage APIs. The SAN Readiness Assessment for server virtualization is being offered to customers preparing for virtual server deployment who are unsure what factors to consider when integrating server and storage virtualization. Pricing for the service starts at $18,500.

HP also made it official that it will be working to integrate LeftHand Networks, EVA midrange storage arrays and XP replication with VMware's vCenter Site Recovery Manager disaster recovery tool.

EMC adds server virtualization services
EMC Corp. rolled out 30 new services and reference architectures for virtual server deployments, including a private cloud service for Microsoft Exchange, SharePoint virtualization and consultative services for efficiently deploying virtual data centers.

Xiotech bundles virtual desktop management with Emprise
Xiotech Corp. launched VM Storage Solution Lite, which combines Xiotech's Virtual View management tool with its Emprise 7000 Edge SAN. Virtual View, a finalist for a Best of VMworld Award in 2008, consolidates an administrator's view of array, physical server and virtual machine storage layers associated with virtual desktops to speed provisioning. The bundle supports up to 10 Intelligent Storage Element (ISE) units for 160 TB, and includes a direct upgrade path to VM Storage Solution, which supports up to 64 ISEs.

Aptare adds vSphere 4 support in StorageConsole 7.1
Aptare Inc.'s StorageConsole 7.1 SRM and backup reporting software now offers predictive analysis and forecasting of VM storage utilization. The overall software suite has also been extended to support monitoring and alerting in addition to user-initiated reports, and has added support for Windows Server 2008.

PHD Virtual releases esXpress 4.0
PHD Virtual Technologies released esXpress 4.0, adding changed block tracking designed to reduce the time and resources required to create backups. esXpress now tracks changes to each VMDK (virtual machine disk format) by using VMware's change-tracking API. The upgraded version also includes a unified central restore GUI.

Quest Software integrates virtual desktop management with NetApp FlexClone
The new release of Quest vWorkspace from Quest Software Inc. now integrates with NetApp Inc. storage systems using NetApp FlexClone cloning features. Quest claims the integration can save up to 50% of virtual desktop storage capacity The new version also adds improved support for audio- and video-based USB devices, as well as greater management control of allowable devices.

3PAR, ParaScale tout cloud customers
3PAR said managed IT service provider and 3PAR Cloud-Agile partner DataPipe now offers virtual private array (VPA) and disaster recovery services as part of its Stratosphere, which are based on 3PAR storage arrays. ParaScale Inc., a startup developing cloud storage software, said VISI, a Minnesota-based regional provider of enterprise managed hosting services, is using ParaScale software as its cloud storage platform.

Symantec backup, Data Robotics' DroboPro certified for vSphere 4
Symantec Corp. said it has been granted VMware Ready Data Protection status, indicating integration of its Backup Exec 12.5, Veritas NetBackup 6.5.4 and Veritas NetBackup PureDisk 6.5 with VMware vSphere 4.

Data Robotics Inc. has been given certification for interoperability between its DroboPro disk array and VMware, and has advanced as a VMware Technology Alliance Partner (TAP) program member to "Select" level membership. The TAP relationship enables Data Robotics to receive VMware technical and marketing support for customers deploying DroboPro in VMware environments.

Akorri signs sales and marketing partnership agreement with 3PAR
Akorri Inc. signed a cooperative marketing and sales support agreement with 3PAR. Interoperability with 3PAR's InServ Storage Server disk arrays was part of Akorri's launch earlier this month of BalancePoint 3.0. 3PAR is now a member of the Akorri PartnerPoint Technology Alliance, and Akorri becomes a 3PAR Alliance Partner.
