Storage Roundup: Voltaire ships 40 gig InfiniBand switch for IBM BladeCenter

Voltaire Inc. said its 40 Gbps InfiniBand switch module for IBM BladeCenter is available. It's targeted at customers running high-performance computing (HPC) applications on BladeCenter servers.

The Voltaire 40 Gbps InfiniBand Switch Module features 14 40 Gbps internal ports for server connectivity and 16 external QSFP ports for fabric connectivity. Voltaire claims the switch consumes only 4 watts of power per port, making it an energy-efficient solution for today's data centers.

Imation locks up LTO tape

Imation Corp. launched its Imation Secure Scan LTO tape-locking product in North America. Secure Scan prevents anybody from writing to or reading from LTO media for security while transporting or storing media offsite.

WeRecoverData.com recovers NetGear Storage Central data

WeRecoverData.com launched a data recovery service for NetGear SC101 Storage Central network-attached storage (NAS) devices. WeRecoverData claims it has a unique extraction protocol that works with Storage Central's proprietary file system.

Manufacturer picks Xiotech ISE system

Manufacturer Spartech Corp. selected Xiotech Corp.'s Emprise 7000 storage system, powered by Intelligent Storage Element (ISE) technology, to be the cornerstone of its new IT infrastructure. Mark Holland, Spartech's manager of IT operations, said his company has seen improved performance since moving critical production data to the Emprise 7000.

Survey: HPC performance not high enough

A survey conducted by parallel NAS vendor Panasas Inc. found that 67% of professionals in high-performance computing (HPC) industries said they needed faster, more scalable storage to keep up with data and I/O performance requirements. Of the 114 people interviewed, 93% said HPC was fundamental to the growth of their business, and 63% said they planned to invest in high-performance storage over the next year.

Animation studio uses BlueArc for new movie

BlueArc Corp. said Canada's leading high-quality digital animation studio, Starz Animation Toronto, used its Titan storage systems to handle computer-generated imagery (CGI) in the production of the feature film 9, the Shane Acker-directed Focus Features movie produced by Tim Burton and Timur Bekmambetov set to premiere this year.

JRM BlueStor aids Apollo 11 restoration

Lowry Digital used JMR Electronics Inc.'s BlueStor PCIe Extender system to help restore video of the Apollo 11 moon landing. The The BlueStor PCIe Extender allows PCI Express bus expansion from a host server, and helps organizations build a RAID storage system by plugging a PCIe SAS RAID controller into one of its external slots. It provides five PCIe expansion slots in an external 3U rackmount configuration also containing 16 hot-swap SAS/SATA disk drive bays and a SAS Expander.
