Storage Roundup: LSI launches 6 Gbps SAS RAID controller cards, Fusion-io releases solid-state benchmark and more

This week's storage news:

LSI Corp. launched a new generation of high-performance MegaRAID SATA+SAS RAID controller cards based on 6 Gbps SAS technology.

The MegaRAID 9200 series controllers feature the LSISAS2108 6 Gbps SAS RAID-on-Chip (ROC) and deliver up to 2.88 GBps in sequential reads and 1.87 GBps in sequential writes. The new controllers have been designed to integrate with existing 3Gbps SATA and SAS infrastructure.

The new 6 Gbps SAS cards support self-discovery/self-configuring expanders, longer cables, standardized zoning, 512 MB 800 MHz DDR2 SDRAM, and are bundled with MegaRAID Storage Manager.

Solid-state storage raises bar for database performance

Fusion-io disclosed TPC-H benchmark test results for its solid-state storage device running with Dell Inc. hardware and Microsoft Windows. The tested system achieved 28,772 QphH (Query-per-Hour Performance Metric) on a 100 GB database, at a cost of $1.47 per database transaction. These results were accomplished using a single Dell PowerEdge T610 server equipped with four Fusion-io 80 GB ioDrives, running Windows Server 2008 Enterprise Edition x64 and Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Enterprise Edition x64.

Syncsort names CEO, gets funding

Syncsort Inc. named former LSI Corp. storage executive Flavio Santoni as its CEO, and said the company has received funding from Insight Venture Partners, Bessemer Venture Partners and Goldman Sachs. This is the first time the data protection software company has received outside investment in its 40-year history.

Extreme Networks and Scale Computing combine switches, storage

Extreme Networks Inc. and Scale Computing will jointly market products for low-cost storage systems. Extreme Networks will offer its BlackDiamond 8800 modular switching family, as well as the Summit X650 and Summit X450 switches, while Scale will offer its SN1000 and SN2000 storage nodes to be purchased together.

3PAR wins at Managed Health Care Associates deal

3PAR Inc. said Managed Health Care Associates (MHA) Inc. has moved to a virtualized 3PAR InServ F-Class Storage Server. MHA claims it doubled storage performance and improved performance while lowering data center power consumption and storage administration time vs. its previous storage setup.

StorMagic enables virtual SAN

StorMagic Inc.'s SvSAN virtual appliance is now available for VMware Infrastructure 3 for ESX 3.5 software on the Intel Server Board S5520UR. This server configuration was developed jointly by StorMagic and Intel engineers. The SvSAN lets IT administrators turn unused storage capacity into a virtual storage-area network (SAN) and works with VMware vCenter Server to enable administrators to configure and manage the virtual environment from their management console.

Cranel Imaging picks ProStor InfiniVault for EMC

ProStor Systems Inc. said Cranel Imaging selected ProStor InfiniVault as its integrated storage system partner for document management archiving and long-term data retention. Cranel sells enterprise content management (ECM) products through VARs.

California, Connecticut cities vote for DataCore

DataCore Software Corp. said the cities of Atascadero, Calif., and South Windsor, Conn., are using SANmelody storage virtualization for their SANs. In both cases, the cities are running SANmelody with VMware on Hewlett-Packard Co. servers.
