Survey finds data centers understaffed

Symantec Corp.'s State of the Data Center 2008 report paints a picture of understaffed data centers and underutilized storage systems.

The report, based on a survey of 1,600 enterprise data center managers and executives, found storage utilization at 50%. The survey also discovered that staffing remains a crucial issue, with 36% of respondents saying their firms are understaffed. Only 4% say they are overstaffed. Furthermore, 43% state that finding qualified applicants is a problem.

Quest acquires MonoSphere for capacity management

Systems management vendor Quest Software Inc. has acquired the assets and most of the employees of MonoSphere Inc., and plans to continue to offer MonoSphere's Storage Horizon storage capacity management software. Quest also says it will integrate Storage Horizon into its existing products, according to a release issued about the acquisition.

Sanbolic adds virtualization support to clustered file system

Sanbolic Inc. has added new distributed locking components to its Melio clustered file system optimized for virtual disk files and databases. Melio FS now supports large clusters of host machines for cloud infrastructures. Sanbolic has also added support for shared host access to a LUN for Windows Server 2008 R2 beta and live migration for Hyper-V, as well as shared access to data on SANs from virtual machines (VMs) running on Citrix Systems Inc.'s XenServer.

Vizioncore launches storage optimization tool

Vizioncore Inc. has rolled out vOptimizer Pro to help customers reclaim overallocated and unused space in Windows virtual machines. vOptimizerPro inspects the virtual machine's file system and resizes partitions. Administrators can set freespace quotas to automatically reduce or increase the virtual machine's volume sizes.

Atto Mac HBAs available with Xyratex RAID system

Atto Technology Inc.'s Celerity 4-Gb Fibre Channel Host Adapter is available for use with the Xyratex F6412E RAID storage system as a solution for Fibre Channel (FC) connectivity with multipathing support for Mac OS X.

Buffalo brings out new SMB storage

Buffalo Technology Inc. has unveiled the TeraStation Duo and the TeraStation III SMB NAS systems. The TeraStation Duo includes a two-drive bay and comes in 1 TB and 2 TB configurations. The TeraStation III is available in 2 TB and 4 TB models, and includes replication, support for Mac's Time Machine, as well as hot spare and hot swap capabilities.

Nirvanix changes CEOs

Cloud storage service provider Nirvanix Inc. has named Jim Zierick as president and CEO, replacing founder Patrick Harr. Zierick has been CEO of Aspyra Inc. and LogicalApps.

Microsoft blesses Mellanox InfiniBand

Mellanox Technologies Ltd. says its 20 Gbps and 40 Gbps InfiniBand adapters have been qualified by Microsoft Windows Hardware Quality Labs testing for Windows HPC Server 2008.

ExaGrid claims solid growth

ExaGrid Systems Inc. says revenue from its data deduplication backup systems increased 120% from last year. ExaGrid, a privately held company, claims more than 300 customers and 1,200 systems installed.
