Emulex has revealed that its LightPulse Fibre Channel HBAs now offer virtual port management for the Solaris 10 operating system. The technology features virtual port management through Emulex's HBAnyware management suite and is designed to enhance the functionality of Solaris containers. HBAnyware features virtual HBA management across all major operating systems, such as Microsoft, VMware, Linux/Xen and Solaris.

Pogo Linux, Nexenta join to release line of storage appliances
Pogo Linux and Nexenta Systems have released a line of storage appliances featuring the NexentaStor open storage software. The appliances, dubbed the Storage Director Z-Series, provide NAS functions built on the ZFS-based NexentaStor software on Pogo Linux hardware platforms. The appliances also include search capabilities to manage backup policies and end-to-end data integrity to eliminate the risk of silent data corruption that impacts many SATA-based solutions.

PowerFile ups energy efficiency of archive appliance to 700 TB per kilowatt
PowerFile has upgraded its Active Archive Appliance (A3). In addition to doubling performance and increasing rack density by 400%, PowerFile has upped A3's energy efficiency to more than 700 TB per kilowatt. A3 now supports up to 280 TB of online capacity in a standard 42U rack enclosure while using less than 5% of the power and cooling required for an equivalent disk-based storage solution.

Other enhancements include:

  • an archive engine with dual-core AMD Opteron architecture that increases cache from 6 TB to 34 TB
  • optional capacity optimization software that can provide for up to 7X reduction of data
  • data retention software that allows administrators to automatically preserve and then dispose of data based on file age, file activity or a specific date
  • SNMP support for integration with existing enterprise storage resource management tools to monitor system status and health.
The A3 is built upon a hybrid storage architecture that combines up to 34 TB of disk-based cache with up to 240TB of Blu-ray-based archive storage. The ArcOS software embedded in the A3 virtualizes all of the storage subsystems into pools of storage that can be managed as a single large volume or multiple, smaller volumes. .
