IDC: iSCSI SAN adoption strong in fourth quarter
IDC released the results of its Worldwide Disk Storage tracker for the fourth quarter of 2007, and the numbers show strong iSCSI SAN adoption. According to the report, the iSCSI SAN market posted 74.9% revenue growth compared to the prior year's quarter. Network Appliance continues to lead the market with 19.6% share, followed by EMC with 17.4% share.
VKernel unveils capacity monitoring appliance for VMware
VKernel released a beta version of the Capacity Bottleneck Analyzer Virtual Appliance, which identifies capacity bottlenecks in storage utilization, as well as CPU and memory resources in VMware ESX environments. The UI, which measures both server and storage resources in one console, can also forecast future bottlenecks. The product is currently available as a beta trial download; the full production version will be available by March 31.
Open-E updates iSCSI SAN software
Open-E, which uses software on memory keys to create iSCSI SANs out of DAS, updated its Data Storage Server (DSS) software. New features include automatic failover between systems, WORM support and NDMP support. Open-E also said it will partner with RAID storage maker HighPoint Technologies to offer preintegrated appliances based on the DSS memory keys and HighPoint's SATA RAID controllers.
Promise, Adaptec launch new RAID controllers
Promise Technology made its SuperTrak EX8658 and SuperTrak EX8654 generally available, adding to its SuperTrak EX host-based SAS/SATA RAID controllers. The new controllers offer more RAID connectivity options in the low-profile MD2 form factor with support for both SAS and SATA hard drives and will be available in the next 30 days.
Meanwhile, Adaptec launched the RAID Series 5 Unified Serial controller product line, offering up to 28-port connectivity with both internal and external ports. The new PCIe interface controllers allow up to 256 SATA or SAS drives to be connected to a single system for 200 TB of storage capacity.
Pillar Data Systems to resell Cisco switches
Pillar Data Systems has started reselling the Cisco MDS 9000 Series of Fibre Channel storage networking fabric switches and multilayer directors. Pillar is now a Cisco Solution Technology Integrator for Storage and will also resell Cisco's SMARTnet support services to provide joint customers with technical support.
LeftHand supports Windows Server 2008
LeftHand Networks said its iSCSI SANs will support Windows Server 2008. LeftHand's product has also received the Windows Server 2008 iSCSI target device logo.
Consulting firm picks Quantum for dedupe
Rust Consulting reportedly cut backup times by 66%, improved restore times from a day to about 20 minutes and reduced its secondary disk capacity by 90 by deploying Quantum's DXi disk-based backup and replication appliances with data deduplication. Rust purchased two DXi5500 disk backup systems, one for the primary site and one for disaster recovery, both configured with Fibre Channel VTL and NAS interfaces.
Schools go for storage SaaS
School Web Lockers, which provides customized Web-based storage services to schools, reported five new customers: the Roman Catholic Diocese Schools of Albany, NY; Clarkstown Central School District, New City, NY; De La Salle Institute, Chicago; New Urban High School, Milwaukie, OR; and Pierson Vocational High School, Nogales, AZ.
