Permabit claims petabyte data archive
Permabit rolled out the Permabit Enterprise Archive Data Center Series, which it claims will support 3 PB of raw disk capacity. The system will start at 96 TB of raw capacity per storage grid and allow 32 grids to be combined into a unified system. The new archive also includes subfile data deduplication, which Permabit has dubbed Scalable Data Reduction. All in all, Permabit is claiming it can support up to 3 PB in a single system with no performance hit. The product is available today at a starting list price of $5 per gigabyte.

HDS launches data migration service
Hitachi (HDS) introduced a data migration service this week that will combine the USP-V virtualization controller with service engineers to perform data migrations at customer sites. HDS said the service will also support competitors' arrays. HDS recently announced support for Brocade's file virtualization, but said this service is based on HDS IP only.

Gear6 updates software for cache appliance
Gear6 has updated the Reflex OS software that runs its CACHEfx caching appliances with new management features. The appliances deploy as a shared network resource attached to NFS servers and clients, and the newest software will create reports on traffic and bottlenecks in the NFS environment with the addition of a new "NFS sniffer." The newest software will also allow users to apply cache to different areas of the environment based on its reports.

Sun resells QLogic
QLogic said Sun is selling QLogic SANbox 9200 Fibre Channel director switches. The SANbox 9000 architecture is a "modular director" that allows chassis modules to scale port capacity along with performance.

SteelEye supports Citrix XenServer
SteelEye announced support for Citrix virtual servers with the introduction of SteelEye Protection Suite for Citrix XenServer. SteelEye has also joined the Citrix Global Alliance Partner program.

Pivot3 gets $24 million
Pivot3, which has been selling its distributed RAID product into the video surveillance market, has received $24 million in series C venture funding led by Mesirow Financial Capital Partners IX. Participation in this round also included new investor Silver Creek Ventures and existing investors Lightspeed Venture Partners and InterWest Partners. The money will be used to expand into adjacent markets, though Pivot3 probably won't ever be marketed as general-purpose storage.

Western Digital unveils 320 GB portable USB drive
Western Digital (WD) introduced a new My Passport Essential Portable USB Drive, meant to complement WD's My Book external drives. The portable drives weigh less than 5 ounces, are bus powered, include Windows sync and encryption software, and support up to 320 GB of capacity. MSRP is $199.99.

Psomas deploys Riverbed
Consulting engineering firm Psomas has deployed 15 Riverbed Steelhead WAFS appliances, as well as Steelhead Mobile software on the laptops of its mobile and remote workforce. Psomas deployed the devices to consolidate its existing IT infrastructure while opening new offices and estimates it will save more than $1 million in a year by increasing employee productivity, according to a Riverbed press release.

European data processor picks Panasas
Tele-Rilevamento Europa (TRE) has halved the time it takes to access stored information by deploying Panasas ActiveStor parallel storage, according to a Panasas press release. TRE, established in 2000, provides data processing services derived from satellite-borne synthetic aperture radar (SAR) to verify the stability of buildings against natural disasters, such as earthquakes.

Service provider picks Infortrend
Nextlink, owners of Taiwanese Internet file sharing site GoGoBox, picked Infortrend's EonStor A16F-G2430 Fibre Channel-to-SATA RAID storage subsystem to support the GoGoBox service. According to an Infortrend press release, the company picked Infortrend over Dell, EMC, Hewlett Packard (HP) and NetApp because the data transfer rate met their Ethernet benchmark of 35 MBps and the subsystem could be directly attached to file servers.

LTO 5 licenses available for developers
HP, IBM and Quantum are offering enhanced package licenses for LTO Ultrium format Generation 5. The licenses are available to subscribers who sign up through ultrium.com. The LTO 5 spec is far from finished, but licensees will receive regularly updated specs as part of the program, which is being offered to tape and tape library developers, as well as users who want to track its progress.

Xyratex to be deployed at Beijing Olympics
Xyratex announced that EDI is using the Xyratex F5412E RAID system for online and archival storage of video surveillance at the Beijing Capital International Airport during the summer Olympics this year.

Storage Bridge Bay Working Group issues 2.0 spec
The Storage Bridge Bay Working Group (SBB) announced the completion and public availability of the SBB 2.0 Specification. SBB is working to develop standardized controller canisters to give vendors a shortcut in the product development process. The new spec standardizes the physical form factor of the sheet-metal canisters and adds code that will stop incompatible canisters from damaging one another. Version 2.0 also boosts the 1.0 spec's support for 28 drives up to 48 and increases the number of power profiles per canister from 100W to 200W.
