IBM restructures server, storage hardware sales
IBM is restructuring its Systems and Technology Group (STG) by market segment, rather than by product type. An IBM spokesman confirmed an Associated Press report that the sales force for hardware products will be structured into four segments: large businesses, small businesses, industry systems for specific vertical markets and microelectronics.

IBM's STG group includes server and storage hardware. Storage products group head Andy Monshaw will continue as the storage "platform leader" for technical product development.

Double-Take picks up TimeSpring
Data replication vendor Double-Take has added continuous data protection (CDP) to its portfolio with the acquisition of TimeSpring for $8.3 million. Double-Take intends to combine CDP with its replication to handle operational recovery from events, such as recovery from routine human errors.

Hitachi Global Storage Technologies, ASUS combine on 1 TB laptop
Hitachi Global Storage Technologies rolled out the 500 GB 2.5-inch Travelstar 5K500, which will be put into laptops and "slim" desktops. One of Hitachi GST OEM partner, ASUS, is planning a notebook that will combine two of these drives for the first 1 TB notebook computer. The products will ship in February.

Hitachi GST has also launched the E5K500, designed for applications requiring 24/7 operation in lower transaction environments. The E5K500 will ship later in the first quarter.

SanDisk bundles online data backup with flash drives
SanDisk launched Titanium Plus, a 4 GB USB flash drive that offers automatic online data backup for every file copied to the drive. SanDisk has partnered with BeInSync, a new outsourced data backup company.. The SanDisk drive comes with six months of free online backup service.

Chelsio snares $25M in funding
Ethernet adapter maker Chelsio secured $25 million in a Series E funding round. This round was led by Investor Growth Capital. The latest round brings Chelsio's total venture capital funding to $92 million.
