Dell expects storage growth
Dell reported its storage revenue grew 8% since last year, below the company's overall 9% increase, and CEO Michael Dell highlighted it as an area he expects to expand during the company's earnings call Thursday evening.

Dell said he expected the Dell/EMC storage partnership to expand and pointed to the $1.4 billion acquisition of EqualLogic and new MD3000I SMB storage system as other factors that show the vendor's commitment to storage.

iQstor expands IP SAN platform
iQstor previewed the iQ2850 iSCSI SAN, which holds up to 240 TB of SATA drives with expansion enclosures. The system will be available in March with a list price of $14,400.

Arsenal Digital adds to backup arsenal
Arsenal Digital added ViaBack RecoveryPlus to its managed services portfolio. ViaBack RecoveryPlus uses data deduplication to help improve storage utilization rates and RPO/RTO.

Western Digital ships cool drive
Western Digital unveiled the WD Caviar GP 500 GB, a 3.5-inch SATA drive that the vendor claims uses 30% less power than other 500 GB drives.

Fujitsu, Tech Data team up
Tech Data's Advanced Infrastructure Solutions Division established a distribution agreement with Fujitsu Computer Systems to sell Fujitsu's Eternus storage systems. The deal includes the Eternus2000, Eternus4000 and Eternus8000 systems.

Time runs out on Sanz
Storage integrator Sanz went out of business when its parent company SAN Holdings filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy, and CEO Todd Oseth, CFO David Rosenthal and the company's directors resigned. The move came within weeks after Sanz disclosed it would not be able to file its quarterly financial reports for last quarter, and its majority shareholder, Sun Capital, withdrew its funding.

Data dedupe still hot
Data duplication stayed atop The InfoPro heat index as the hottest storage technology. Interviews with 250 Fortune 1000 and midrange enterprise system users revealed deduplication as the most common technology in their roadmap, followed by virtual tape libraries and 4 Gbps Fibre Channel gear. Data Domain was the most mentioned deduplication vendor, followed by EMC and Network Appliance (NetApp).

Crutchfield leans on CommVault
Consumer electronic products marketer Crutchfield Corp. switched from Symantec to CommVault for backup software. Crutchfield vice president of IT Steve Weiskircher said he has reduced backups from 48 hours to about five since switching and said CommVault's Galaxy Data Protection software has better support for Microsoft SharePoint than Symantec's Veritas NetBackup and EMC Networker.

Isilon cracks 600 customer mark
Clustered storage vendor Isilon said it has doubled its customer base the last year and passed the 600-customer mark. Isilon identified manufacturing, life sciences, oil and gas, telecommunications, media and entertainment, the Internet and the federal government as industries with strong adoption rates.
