Weekly compilation of storage news:

DataCore offers free downloadable thin provisioning trial
DataCore Software announced that it has made a downloadable free trial of its thin provisioning software available on its Web site. The software converts PC servers into disk servers that appear as additional internal drives to servers on LANs or storage area networks (SAN). The software also includes snapshots, failover of disk servers, auto provisioning of disk space and long-distance asynchronous replication over IP WANs. The 30-day free trial is available for download. DataCore is also offering a downloadable free trial of its SANMelody Lite software that includes an iSCSI target and supports up to four physical or logical disk drives up to 500 GB for home office and PC networks.

Cisco earnings up, Brocade prelim earnings slightly down
Storage networking rivals Cisco and Brocade issued earnings statements this week, Cisco's in an official Q3 conference call and Brocade in a preliminary earnings report. Cisco announced that its revenue for the quarter was up 18% over the same quarter last year to $9.43 billion, a figure that also beat Wall Street analyst estimates of around $9.2 billion. Cisco reported that its revenues were boosted by sales of routers and IP switches to Web-based companies that need to deliver more content to an increasingly demanding Internet market for multimedia content.

Brocade, meanwhile, announced that its earnings will fall below forecast by $3 million to $5 million, saying it expects to report revenue of between $325 million and $327 million compared to guidance issued May 31 of $330 million to $340 million. However, Brocade stocks were up following the news, as Wall Street analysts found its decline slight in comparison with Network Appliance (NetApp), which reported a $61 million shortfall in earnings last week, saying storage spending has declined in the U.S. Investors were kind to Brocade as its operating costs have not increased and its shortfall was deemed mild.

Symantec adds plug-ins for Enterprise Vault
Symantec announced two new "e-Discovery Connectors" and supporting services for its Enterprise Vault Discovery Accelerator product. These new connectors will provide integration with third-party case management, review, analytics, forensics and desktop collection tools. The tools include the e-Discovery Review Connector and the e-Discovery Collection Connector. The Review Connector will allow Enterprise Vault data to be ported to e-Discovery tools that "cull" data, reducing it and redacting it to produce only what's relevant to pending litigation. The Discovery Collection connector will allow similar integration with third-party case management software.

Rackable packs in more storage
Rackable Systems announced the availability of a new model of its RapidScale-clustered storage appliance and a new storage system dubbed the OmniStor SE3016 system. RapidScale, based on the company's acquisition of TeraScale last November, allows users to mix Gigabit Ethernet (GigE), InfiniBand, WAN and 10 GigE network access to the same cluster and now can process 60,000 files per second as opposed to the previous version that was limited to 30,000. The OmniStor system is the first storage appliance offered by Rackable that matches its half-depth servers, which allow for two units to be put back-to-back into a standard data center rack, increasing density.

Intransa and Microsoft announce 10 GigE integration
Intransa announced today that it has completed the Microsoft Exchange Solution Reviewed Program (ESRP), Version 2.0 for Exchange Server 2007, which means Microsoft has now listed Intransa's new 10 GigE iSCSI SAN on the Exchange Server Test Center home page; 10 GigE iSCSI SAN to be certified with Microsoft Exchange Server 2007.

Pillar touts U.K. customer
Pillar Data announced Virgin Games as the company's 200th customer. Virgin Games, a wholly owned trading division of Virgin.com Ltd., provides online gaming services to users in the U.K. Leigh Brazier, Technical and Operations Director at Virgin Games, said in a Pillar press release that the company chose Pillar's Axiom array over systems from Network Appliance because of Pillar's ability to tier storage within the box and within individual disk drives, which he said made the Pillar product more appealing as a "green" storage box.
