EMC buys Indigo Stone for bare-metal restore
EMC has acquired Indigo Stone International, Inc., in a quiet move first uncovered by a report in CRN. The company's Enterprise Rapid Recovery Methodology software provides multi-platform, multivendor server recovery; the company is a technology partner of EMC's Avamar subsidiary.

EMC did not announce the acquisition, which closed in March. Reached for comment, EMC's director of PR Michael Gallant said, "the transaction value was so small that it did not warrant an announcement from a business materiality perspective."

In a separate release, EMC announced that Timmons Group, a civil engineering and environmental design firm, has migrated to a Clariion CX3-20 FC/iSCSI system, and also attached a Celerra networked-attached storage (NAS) gateway for Microsoft Exchange. Timmons Group also bought the latest version of EMC Replication Manager software .

Unisys launches pay-for-use storage
Unisys announced two new global offerings -- a hosted utility storage service in which the user still manages the environment, called Metered Storage, and an outsourced storage service called Managed Utility Storage. Storage use is measured by gigabytes per month.

Boeing Selects Ciprico storage software
Ciprico Inc. announced that it has been awarded a multi-year, $1 million contract to supply storage software in up to 250 of its Talon appliances to Boeing. Ciprico was represented by Federal Edge Inc., a VAR serving the United States military, government agencies, and aerospace industry. Ciprico's products will be incorporated into platforms Boeing is selling to the military.

Falconstor dials in Korea telecom
FalconStor announced that Korea Telecom has deployed its virtual tape library (VTL). According to a press release, the company cut its backup window from 30 hours to minutes by adding disk-based backup.

Brookfield Homes picks Mimosa
Mimosa announced that Brookfield Homes, one of America's largest home builders, has deployed the Mimosa NearPoint for Microsoft Exchange Server email archiving. Brookfield has been able to eliminate brick-level backups of Exchange by using email archiving, shrinking Exchange storage in production by 25 percent.

Southeast Alabama Medical Center installs Digi-Data
Digi-Data Corporation announced that Southeast Alabama Medical Center deployed a storage array based on Digi-Data's T-2000 controller, which was installed by local VAR LH Computer Services. The array, which stores backups from TSM, has a capacity of 22 terabytes.

RedEnvelope selects Pillar Data Systems
Pillar Data Systems announced that online gift-giving Web site RedEnvelope has chosen the Pillar Axiom array for customer information and files. According to a press release, RedEnvelope was attracted in part to the power efficiency of the Axiom array, saying it offered twice the disk spindles in less floor space than competitors' products that RedEnvelope evaluated.

Alibris consolidates on 3PAR
3PARData Inc. announced that online used-book retailer Alibris has deployed 3PAR's InServ S800 Storage Server to support its inventory management system, retail Web site, search engine and e-commerce order-processing system, which are all based on multiple clustered Microsoft SQL Server databases. The company was previously managing multiple direct-attached storage (DAS) repositories.

IBM invests $1 billion in energy efficiency
IBM announced this week that it has invested $1 billion in a data center redesign that the company claims will allow a doubling in compute power within the next three years without increasing power consumption or carbon footprint. IBM is also launching "Project Big Green", an assessment service/product package meant to help customers diagnose and restructure data centers for power efficiency.

Sun to give away encryption key management
Sun announced that the StorageTek Key Management System (KMS), an instance of Secure Solaris running on an UltraSparc server plus with implementation services, will be offered free from now on. When first announced last year, the system came with a price tag of $45,000.

NetApp adds support for bigger disks
Network Appliance Inc. (NASDAQ:NTAP) announced the availability of two new hard disk drives: a 750GB SATA drive and a 300GB Fibre Channel (FC) drive. Previously, the largest SATA drive offered by NetApp was 500 GB; the new FC drive includes 4 Gbps connectivity.

C2C updates email archiving tool
C2C, a UK email archiving company, announced a new version of its Archive One product. The product will now support Windows Vista, Exchange 2007, enhanced PST management and pre-defined archiving templates.

Akorri adds service-level management for VMware
Akorri, Inc. announced the availability of BalancePoint 1.5 management software. The new version offers cross-domain management for applications running on VMware, including visibility into server and storage resources to help resolve performance problems and improve service levels.

QLogic working on virtual HBAs
QLogic Corp. announced that it is working with Microsoft to integrate N_Port ID Virtualization (NPIV) technology with Microsoft's virtualization management product, System Center Virtual Machine Manager. The result would be the ability to provision virtual QLogic HBA ports across multiple physical servers.

Onaro announces scaled-down software
Onaro announced a version of its SANscreen software for small and midsized businesses (SMBs) called SANscreen SME Edition. Onaro defines the SME market as corporations with switch port counts under 500. Pricing for SANscreen SME Edition starts at $9,995. QLogic and Onaro have also signed an agreement in which QLogic will license a trial version of Onaro SANscreen SME Edition with the QLogic 10 Gb FC backbone architecture to offer a SAN assessment program.

Teneros unveils bigger email archiving appliance
Teneros released a new member of its email archiving appliance product line. The new appliance supports 1,000 mailboxes and includes 400 GB of storage.
