NetApp touts Happy Feet animation user
Network Appliance Inc. (NetApp) announced that Animal Logic, the animation and visual effects company behind the animated feature Happy Feet, uses more than 300 terabytes (TB) of NetApp storage to house its visual effects data. Animal Logic has also worked on films such as The Matrix Reloaded, Lord of the Rings and Moulin Rouge.
Brocade reports file virtualization user
Brocade announced that engineering design firm Dyer, Riddle, Mills & Precourt (DRMP) is using Brocade's WAFS in seven of its 19 sites in Florida, Georgia, North Carolina and South Carolina for large Computer-Aided Design (CAD) files. DRMP also implemented Brocade's StorageX file virtualization software to migrate files automatically from remote sites to its headquarters in Orlando, Fla.
Brazilian court uses Expand WAN optimization
Expand Networks announced that Brazil's labor court, Tribunal Regional do Trabalho, has deployed Expand Networks technology to optimize a 64 Kbps network between 24 main sites and a total of 620 locations. More than 600 employees at the court's headquarters use the court system's network to send emails, exchange documents and access the Web.
C2C claims 500 email archiving users
Email archiving software maker C2C announced the 500th worldwide installation of its Archive One product. C2C said it has nearly 200 new installations in the past year alone. C2C users include USHealth Group, a Fort Worth, Tex.-based insurance company.
HP announces SMB products
At a recent event for small and midsized businesses (SMB), Hewlett-Packard (HP) announced 12 new products specifically aimed at that market. Among them: StorageWorks Media Vault Pro, a $799 disk-based backup device with up to 2 TB capacity with the use of an expansion bay. It comes with Spare Backup's Workgroup software and the option of subscribing to Spare Backup's offsite storage services, which will support up to 25 users and up to 1 TB. The first two users of this service with the HP package will get 2 GB of storage from Spare Backup included with the purchase, according to HP.
Codenomicon releases storage security assessment tool
Codenomicon announced Defensics Filesystems & Storage, tools which can be used by vendors to test products against security vulnerabilities in CIFS, iSCSI and NFS protocols during software development. Enterprises can also use the tool to assess the security of storage systems in their environment or prior to deployment.
Mempile tests out half-terabyte optical discs
Mempile announced that its TeraDisc technology will soon be capable of storing up to one terabyte of data, after tests of the holographic discs reached over 100 virtual layers on one DVD-sized optical disc. Future optimization will allow the recording of 200 layers and of up to 5 GB of data per layer, resulting in capacities of over one terabyte.
Emulex GAs virtual HBA software
Emulex announced the general availability of VMPilot, a new management software application for Microsoft Virtual Server 2005 environments. VMPilot works with Emulex LightPulse host bus adapters (HBA) to allow for the creation and migration of Microsoft Virtual Server-based virtual machines attaching to storage area networks (SAN). VMPilot also migrates virtual machines while maintaining SAN attachment.
Incipient woos 3PARdata
3PARdata has partnered with split-path storage virtualization startup Incipient Inc. Incipient has joined 3PAR's Utility Computing partner program and self-certified its flagship product, the Incipient Network Storage Platform (iNSP) software suite, with the 3PAR InServ Storage Server product line, the companies said. Incipient is also partnered with HP; analysts say partnerships are crucial for Incipient to establish itself in the market at this point.
Panasas lands 10th patent
Panasas announced the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) granted the company U.S. Patent No. 7,191,357 for "hybrid quorum/primary-backup fault-tolerance model," a high-availability feature within Panasas's ActiveStor clustered network attached storage (NAS).
