Anyone looking to create a shortlist of storage products to evaluate this year should start with our 2006 Products of the Year winners for a guide to some of the best new storage technologies on the market.
In the storage management arena data classification stole the show with startup Abrevity Inc. and EMC Corp. taking the top prizes. The ability to organize data as it is stored in such a way that makes it readily and easily restorable for business and compliance reasons is top of mind for many users in 2007.
Backup and disaster recovery is a tough area in which to innovate, but every year new companies emerge to challenge the incumbents. Safeguarding remote data is one area in which smaller companies are leading the way and Signiant Inc.'s Mobilize for Remote Data Protection product took the gold award in this category.
Other category winners included Brocade Communications Systems Inc. in the network equipment area, IBM for backup hardware and OnStor Inc. in the disk array space.
We only award prizes to the top three products in each category, but this year's finalists are well worth checking out too.
If you are using any of these products and your experience differs to the assessment of our judges, please write to us and let us know.
