… And more: Classification, encryption, backup and intelligent switches

Backup reporting vendor WysDM Software Inc. has updated its software to include application discovery capabilities that provide reporting and analysis on any third-party application. WysDM has also racked up its third OEM partner in Copan Systems Inc. The other two are EMC and Avamar Technologies.

Sepaton Inc. and Luminex Software Inc. are planning to announce a joint product in which Luminex's mainframe software will be added to Sepaton's VTL for mainframe disk-based backup.

The second version of Scentric Inc.'s Destiny data classification software will have a new focus on supporting compliance archives and automate the migration of data between tiers of storage or into archive repositories, according to Larry Cormier, senior vice president (SVP) of marketing for the company. The updated software will also include a "gap analysis" feature, which will flag unprotected sensitive data, such as credit card numbers.

McData Corp. will unveil a partnership with StoreAge Networking Technologies to OEM its data protection and data management software on the Application Services Module (ASM) of its intelligent switch, announced in February.

Crossroads Systems Inc. is coming out with the Re-Verify Appliance (RVA), a 1U box that will monitor digital linear tape (DLT), Linear Tape-Open (LTO) and Sun/StorageTek 9840 tape drives for media errors and drive performance. The product, currently in beta, will be priced at $15,000 for the first 11 tape slots.

DataCore Software Corp. has released Traveller CPR (Continuous Protection and Recovery), a continuous data protection (CDP) and high-availability mirroring product for storage.

Siafu Software LLC is announcing a low-priced encryption appliance to go along with its Swarm IP SAN/NAS device marketed to small and midsized businesses (SMB). The Sypher inline tape encryption appliance will ship in November with a manufacturer's suggested retail price of $6,995.

StorServer Inc. will announce the K6000 backup appliance, which performs disk-to-disk-to-tape (D2D2T) backup within a single rack enclosure. The product is shipping immediately, starting at $220,000 for a 1TB, 300 Slot, 4 LTO-3 configuration, including installation and one year of 24/7 support.

And after hyping the product for more than a year, Seagate Technology has finally announced that its self-encrypting laptop drive, called DriveTrust ... will be delivered next year. In the first quarter of calendar 2007, Seagate has announced that it plans to deliver the Momentus 5400 FDE.2 for notebook computers. Still no sign of an enterprise-level self-encrypting hard drive or array.
