Weekly compilation of storage news:

IDC report: EMC falling behind in software
While the worldwide market for storage software grew to $2.5 billion, up 8.6% from last year, software revenue at EMC Corp. has been falling since 2004, according to a recent report by analyst firm IDC. The most recent figures show EMC software revenues dropping 3.2% from last year. Though EMC still has the largest share of the market (26.4 %), with storage software sales of $654 million, its share in the second quarter of 2005 was 29.6%.

"I think they've spread themselves too thin," said Rhoda Phillips, research manager for IDC's storage software group. Phillips said that at least part of the profit decline could be attributed to EMC's well-publicized Symmetrix shipping snafu earlier this year, which would affect array-based software products, such as replication. In general, Phillips said, EMC is in "a tough situation" trying to assimilate all of its recent acquisitions, but still, "We'd like to see more signs of improvement."
