EMC touts Rainfinity customers, shifts executives
EMC Corp. announced that it added more than 50 new EMC Rainfinity Global File Virtualization customers in the second quarter of 2006. Rainfinity's file virtualization capabilities for multivendor network attached storage (NAS) environments is being used to virtualize more than a petabyte of customer information, EMC claims. One new customer was named in a press release, Johns Hopkins University, but EMC was unable to provide any customers for SearchStorage.com to talk to.
Meanwhile, EMC also announced a shuffle in its executive team to fill the gap left by Bill Teuber, EMC's former chief financial officer (CFO). Teuber was named vice chairman in May. This week, EMC announced his replacement, David Goulden, who previously led customer operations. Goulden has been appointed executive vice president (EVP) and CFO. Dave Donatelli, EVP of storage product operations, will take on an expanded role and will oversee
the company's entire portfolio of storage hardware and software. David DeWalt, EVP and formerly the president of EMC Software, has been named president of EMC customer operations and content management software group.
IBM buys FileNet, adds to DS4000 line
IBM agreed to purchase software maker FileNet Corp. for $1.6 billion, a move that industry experts say could be a challenge to EMC's position as the leader in data management software.
Last year, FileNet had a 9.2% share of the global content management software market valued at $3.2 billion, placing it right behind EMC's Documentum division, which had 11.3%. IBM had a 9.1% share, according to IDC numbers.
The all-cash deal is IBM's biggest expenditure in three years and fourth largest to date. It is the latest in a string of 40 acquisitions for the company over the past two years.
Elsewhere, IBM announced an addition to its DS4000 Series of midrange arrays, which it OEMs from Engenio Information Technologies Inc. The new model, called the DS4200 Express, is a SATA-only 4 terabyte box that starts at around $11,500 with two controllers. IBM also announced that the entire DS4000 line will include storage services capabilities, including flashcopy, volume copy and remote mirroring.
NetApp and Brocade team up
Network Appliance Inc. announced availability of the 4 Gbps Brocade Communications Systems Inc. SilkWorm 48000 Director. NetApp also currently resells the Brocade SilkWorm 200E 16-port switch, the SilkWorm 4100 32-port switch and the recently announced SilkWorm 4900 64-port switch.
Sepaton adds security partners
Virtual tape library (VTL) maker Sepaton Inc. announced that it will partner with both NeoScale Systems Inc. and Decru Inc., makers of external encryption appliances. The combined offering with NeoScale features Sepaton's S2100-ES2 VTL appliance and NeoScale's CryptoStor Fibre Channel (FC) appliance. NetApp subsidiary Decru's DataFort appliance has also been "validated for interoperability" with the Sepaton S2100-ES2 . The partnerships are for joint marketing and sales only and do not involve a deeper integration between products, Sepaton said.
Zmanda updates open source data protection software
Open source data protection software broker Zmanda Inc. announced that its Amanda Enterprise Edition will now support Windows and Solaris operating systems, adding to the previously supported Linux operating environment. Amanda Enterprise will now also feature improved security for both backup and restore processes, including better support for firewalls, and support for OpenSSL.
Sun intros new external RAID arrays
Sun Microsystems Inc. introduced its first joint roadmap product with StorageTek since the two companies merged last year. The Sun StorageTek 6140 array replaces the StorageTek FlexLine 380 array with new features, such as RoHS (restriction of the use of certain hazardous substances) compliance and 500 GB SATA drives. The 6540 FC array is a 4 Gbps FC array focused on large databases and high-performance computing. The system features a FC-SATA drive intermixing, 4 Gbit FC ports, 4 GB cache, application-oriented management, switched-drive connectivity and a maximum capacity of 224 disk drives.
The StorageTek 6140 array starts at $25,000 and is available from Sun and its authorized resellers. The StorageTek 6540 array starts at $85,000 and will be available in the next 30 days.
Permabit signs OEM agreement with FAST
Fast Search & Transfer (FAST), announced an original equipment manufacturer (OEM) partnership with Permabit Inc. Permabit will integrate both its Dynamic Information Services information retention and control software, and Permabit Compliance Store with FAST InStream, an OEM-specific data classification and search product.
