Exabyte to offer itself for acquisition
Exabyte Corporation announced that it has retained St. Charles Capital LLC, a Denver-based investment banking firm, to assist it in reviewing strategic business alternatives, including the merger or sale of the company. The company said there is no timeline for when the consultation will be completed.

Onaro customer group makes wish list
Onaro, Inc., hosted the first meeting of its Onaro Customer Advisory Panel last week. The group requested more detailed reporting from Onaro. Group discussion also found that "capacity planning remains a dark art" for nearly all attendees, and that spreadsheets and guesswork are the cornerstones even with SRM tools deployed. The meeting also concluded that single-panel provisioning is not being used by storage administrators even when available. Most administrators prefer custom scripts and command-line interfaces. The Onaro Customer Advisory Panel meets twice a year. The second panel is planned for the fall.

GeeksForRelief.com offers free remote backup services
A consortium of independent online data backup service providers has joined together to form www.geeksforrelief.com, and today announced the extension of free backup services to businesses and households in hurricane-prone areas. The service, which is provided free of charge during hurricane season, is available to all computer users located in coastal communities throughout the Southeastern and Atlantic United States. The services will provide from 2 gigabytes (GB) to 10 GB of free online backup space to those in the affected areas for 120 days after the individual or organization activates the service.

Buffalo unveils speedy SMB NAS
Buffalo announced the release of the new LinkStation Pro, a low-end NAS device that claims transfer rates of up to 35 megabytes per second. The box also includes gigabit Ethernet, SATA and Active Directory Support. It is available in capacities ranging from 250 GB to 750 GB with prices starting at $299.

Emulex HBAs shipping in IBM BladeCenter
Emulex Corporation announced general availability of its Emulex LightPulse LP1105-BC dual-channel HBA for use in the IBM BladeCenter. The Emulex LP1105-BC (IBM part no. 39Y9186) is designed to work in Windows, Linux and AIX operating systems.
