IDC: Disk industry to break records through 2010
2005 was a record-breaking year for the worldwide hard disk drive industry in terms of both shipments and revenue, according to a new study by analyst firm IDC.
Among the records broken in 2005 were the following:
- Global drive unit shipments increased to nearly 381 million drives, a 24.4% increase over 2004
- Revenue closed at $27.9 billion, breaking the 1997 record of $27.8 billion
- The world's smallest (0.85 inch) and largest (500 GB) drives began to ship in 2005
- The world's first perpendicular recording drive shipped in 2005
IDC predicts the following:
- Cumulative worldwide drive shipments will exceed 3 billion units from 2005-2010
- The 3.5-inch form factor will continue to provide the highest unit shipment volume of any form factor through 2010
Taiwan Cooperative Bank deploys Cisco, IBM
Cisco Systems Inc. announced that Taiwan Cooperative Bank has deployed a Cisco-IBM Fiber Channel SAN. The bank is using MDS 9509 switches with FICON capability and IBM's enterprise disk storage systems (the press release did not mention which systems). Among the reasons the bank chose Cisco is the virtual SAN capability on the switch; using this feature means the bank can integrate two different databases to allow pilots and normal services to run at the same time.
LSI, Seagate form SAS initiative
LSI Logic Corp. and Seagate Technology announced the SAS Leadership Initiative, aimed at "driving rapid end-user migration to SAS technology." As the first step under the new initiative, the two companies are bundling LSI SAS adapters with Seagate SAS hard drives for the channel market, making it possible for users to convert from SCSI to SAS or upgrade SATA-only configurations to SAS/SATA combinations.
CentrePath folds in replication monitoring
CentrePath Inc. has integrated its Magellan replication monitoring tool into ComBrio's Network Control Center network monitoring product. With the addition of this tool, customers will be able to perform fault tolerance tests, root cause analyses and be alerted to bad configurations when performing data replication.
Kano markets iSCSI for SMBs
Kano Technologies Corp. introduced the X-Spand IP, an iSCSI storage appliance for the small and midsized business (SMB) market. The X-Spand IP SAN is deployable within a single rackmount space, offers 860 MBps bandwidth and up to 12 terabytes of protected RAID storage capacity. The product is available now through Kano's reseller partners, with prices starting at the manufacturer's suggested retail price of $5,999.
