Daily compilation of storage news:

Montilio breaks file serving record
Montilio Inc. announced it achieved a result of 47,586 TCP operations per second on the industry standard SPEC benchmark with its RapidFile storage to LAN gateway card added to a standard, entry-level server. This is the fastest result ever published on a single-node server with 32% performance improvement over NetApp's FAS980 (36,063) and 31% increase over EMC's Celerra NS700 (36,335), the company claims.

The FAS980 and NS700 are the best performing nonclustered products from NAS market leaders Network Appliance and EMC. Both are priced at least 10 times higher than RapidFile together with the server, according to Montilio.

Data Domain adds WAN vaulting
Data Domain Inc. announced a WAN vaulting software option for its DD400 series backup-to-disk appliances. The company claims that after using its deduplication technology, backup data sets are effectively shrunk by 99%, to a size where WAN vaulting is now economically and operationally feasible.

Atheros Communications is using the DD Replicator software option to store portions of the previous night's backup data in a remote location, eliminating the risks associated with holding data on site until it is sent to tape and trucked off site. "It is like having an 'insurance policy' for a disaster at our main site, with the added bonus of simplified, faster backups at our remote locations," said Eric Eckman, IT manager at Atheros.

Bell Micro offers SAN bundle
Bell Microproducts Inc. has released an exclusive integrated SAN product through partnerships with Apple Computer, QLogic and BakBone. The system is a combination of BakBone's NetVault backup and recovery software, Apple's Xserve, and XRAID server and storage system with QLogic Fibre Channel host bus adapters and QLogic SANbox switch.

Law group deploys Availl
Availl Inc. announced that the Resolution Law Group P.C., a nationwide law firm, deployed Availl WAFS software to address the five to 10 minute delays it was experiencing as files opened across the firm's virtual private network. Resolution, which focuses on environmental risk, insurance and securities arbitration, has offices across the U.S., including Northern and Southern California, Washington, D.C., and Indianapolis. The firm added its Los Angeles area office, and expanded its San Francisco Bay area office and staff in the past year -- moves that further taxed its network of Windows servers and storage at each site.

According to Resolution's network administrator Chris Peckham in a press release, the firm went with Availl because of its file-locking capabilities. "No other solution provided file locking, as well as acceptable access speeds at any distance," Peckham said.

Buffalo announces new USB drives
Buffalo Technology announced the latest addition to its DriveStation line of Universal Serial Bus (USB) 2.0 hard drives. This version includes a 500 GB model and SATA.

Solix validated by Oracle
Solix Technologies Inc. announced that the integration of its Archivejinni database archiving product with Oracle E-Business Suite applications has been validated by Oracle.

LSI names new CTO
LSI Logic Corp. named Robert L. Payne senior vice president and chief technology officer (CTO). He will report to Abhi Talwalkar, LSI president and CEO. Payne joins LSI from Philips Semiconductors where he served as vice president and general manager of system technology and architecture.

Neverfail appoints former HP executive
The Neverfail Group announced Karen Slatford as its new nonexecutive chairman. Slatford currently serves as executive chairman for Hal Knowledge Solutions, an Italian-based business intelligence software vendor; as nonexecutive chairman for Portwise AB, a Swedish security software company; and as nonexecutive director of The Listening Co., a U.K.-based company focused on the outsourced call center market. Her professional career includes 18 years with Hewlett-Packard Ltd. (HP) where she was chairman at HP U.K. Ltd., as well as vice president and general manager of worldwide sales and marketing for the business customer organization.
