Storage Clips: Amex signs over storage to EMC

Amex signs managed storage services deal with EMC
EMC announced that American Express has signed over the management of storage for several thousand servers to EMC Managed Services. The details of the contract were not disclosed and Amex declined to discuss the deal.

Separately, EMC announced a managed services portfolio that will allow customers to outsource all or part of their storage infrastructure to the company. The service can include EMC Residency Services, which provides an on-site EMC worker to assist with storage management, from provisioning and monitoring to troubleshooting or can be a short-term engagement to supplement a customer's existing storage operations. The EMC Managed Services portfolio also includes different levels of managed utility service, from partial outsourcing to EMC taking over the customer's entire environment.

EMC Managed Services are an extension of the EMC Technology Solutions group's professional services portfolio, which includes consulting and implementation services. The services are available immediately to customers worldwide.

PolyServe consolidates SQL servers
PolyServe introduced the Database Utility for SQL Server, which will allow users to consolidate up to hundreds of disparate Microsoft SQL Server databases into a single cluster. The software runs directly on Microsoft Server System and rehosts SQL Server instances to another server upon system failure, with all servers in a cluster as possible active-active failover targets for other servers. The PolyServe Database Utility for SQL Server supports up to 16 SQL instances per node, for a total of 240 in the cluster.

Polyserve also announced that customers such as HSBC, Bridgestone, Mayo Medical Ventures, Greif and others have deployed Database Utility for SQL Server.

AmeriVault mentors Chinese startup
AmeriVault Corp. announced that its executives are mentoring a startup company, We Tie Technology, which does backup and disaster recovery managed services for Chinese businesses. AmeriVault provides backup and recovery services in the Boston area.

"We Tie is facing the same challenges we did when we started eight years ago, so we are happy to collaborate with them and share the expertise we have gained over the years," Bud Stoddard, president and CEO of AmeriVault, said in a press release.

Iomega announces desktop autoloader
Iomega Corp. announced the availability of the Iomega REV Loader 280, a desktop autoloader aimed at small businesses. The REV Loader 280 provides access to 280 GB (560 GB compressed) of storage, managing up to eight removable 35 GB REV disks in a compact desktop form factor less than 7 inches tall and 5 inches wide. The autoloader is generally available at a street price of around $1,000. Iomega REV 35 GB disks are available for approximately $50 per disk in quantities of four.

FalconStor teams in Taiwan
FalconStor announced that its IPStor and PrimeVault products have been chosen by Chunghwa Telecom HiNet, Taiwan's largest information and telecom service provider, as the basis for data protection services targeting small and midsized businesses in Taiwan. The two companies have a long-standing partnership, dating back to a 2001 deal with HiNet hiStorage, the storage service subsidiary of Chunghwa Telecom HiNet.

INSC does DR for hedge fund
Innovative Networking Solutions Corp. (INSC) announced it has worked with a New York-based hedge fund to expand its tape backup and provide a disaster recovery plan. By working with INSC, the hedge fund prioritized recovery tiers and formalized its DR plan; the client was not named in the press release about the engagement.
