10 GigE makes its way through pipeline
Connectivity component startup NetXen Inc. announced the launch of its multi-protocol, network interface controller product line, including new 10 GigE NICs. Major system suppliers, including Dell, HP and IBM, plan to incorporate NetXen's new 10 GigE chips in products currently under development.

Meanwhile, Force10 Networks introduced the S2410 data center switch, supporting 24 line-rate 10 GigE ports and switching latency of 300 nanoseconds in a compact form factor.

FC-SATA group adds members
Emulex announced that three new members are joining its Fibre Channel (FC)-SATA partnership, bringing the total number of supporters to 12. The group is working on making an interface between the FC and SATA protocols, so that FC and SATA disks don't require bridging technology to communicate with one another. The group's new members include Fujitsu Computer Products of America, Hitachi Global Storage Technologies and Finisar, a provider of fiber optic and testing products.

Enterprise Grid Alliance releases guidelines
The Enterprise Grid Alliance, a vendor group developing interoperable grid products and best practices, released its data and storage provisioning requirements for enterprise grids. The requirements outlined by the vendor group in the report, "Enterprise Grid Data and Storage Provisioning," detail storage provisioning needs and questions that grid administrators will likely want addressed, according to the group.

Tacit Networks adds WAN optimization
Tacit Networks announced that its Ishared WAFS platform will now include WAN optimization. Tacit Networks' ARC (Acceleration, Reduction and Compression) for TCP-based Windows applications will become a standard feature in the company's Ishared software, The WAN optimization addition is part of Ishared's 3.0 release. Ishared 3.0 also includes support for Microsoft Windows Server 2003 R2 and new security features. The ARC WAN optimization component of the software is in beta testing now and will be available in April 2006. It will be offered as an upgrade at no charge to current customers and as part of Tacit Networks' standard Ishared offering to new customers.

Fotolog snaps up 3Par
3Par Inc. announced that Fotolog Inc., an online photo-sharing company, has selected the 3Par InServ Storage Server with 3Par Thin Provisioning to consolidate and support its database and photo serving applications. New York-based Fotolog, which hosts over 3 million users and 90 million photos worldwide, says the 3Par product has reduced storage administration time by 99%.

Hammer OEMs Zetera
Hammer Storage, a division of Bell Microproducts Inc., launched a new line of network storage that incorporates Zetera Corp.'s Z-SAN Storage over IP products. The product line, branded the Hammer Z-Series, will include desktop and 1U rackmount enclosures for business users.

CommVault, Fujitsu declare interoperability
CommVault and Fujitsu Siemens announced today that Fujitsu's CentricStor virtual tape library has been certified for use with CommVault's QiNetix backup software.

PacketLight tweaks SAN platform
PacketLight Networks Ltd. upgraded its PL-10 SAN extension platform to target small and mid-sized businesses (SMBs). The product enables carriers to sell SAN extension services at speeds of Nx2 Mbps or Nx1.5 Mbps, low data rates that are affordable for SMBs.

SonicWall adds to CDP
SonicWall Inc. announced that it has added bare-metal recovery and local archiving options to its continuous data protection (CDP) products. Baremetal/local archiving is the newest enhancement to SonicWall CDP solutions, launched in February this year following the company's November 2005 acquisition of Lasso Logic.

Data Domain, Xyratex add VPs
Data Domain announced that Beth White has been named vice president of marketing, and Dan McGee has been named vice president of engineering. Before joining Data Domain, White had served as vice president of worldwide marketing at Vixel, a storage switch company that was acquired by Emulex. McGee has held senior management positions at both Pinnacle Systems and Hewlett-.Packard.

Meanwhile, Xyratex Ltd announced the appointment of Todd Gresham to the position of executive vice president, storage and network systems business. Gresham joined Xyratex in September 2005 through the acquisition of nStor Technologies where he served as CEO and president.
