Storage Clips: Oracle adds support for EMC Celerra

Oracle adds support for EMC Celerra
Oracle announced a new plug-in that will integrate monitoring, service level management, configuration analysis and diagnostic capabilities for EMC Corp. Celerra systems into Oracle Enterprise Manager 10g Grid Control. The plug-in is available via the Oracle Technology Network Web site and priced at $1,500 per terabyte of managed storage.

Oracle and EMC have a longstanding partnership with more than 40,000 joint customers, including 90 of the Fortune 100. Oracle is a charter member of the EMC Developers Program and EMC is an Oracle Certified Advantage Partner. EMC and Oracle maintain a Joint Service Center staffed by service engineers from both companies. Both companies use each other's products in their own businesses.

Kindred Healthcare goes for Cisco storage network
Cisco announced that Kindred Healthcare, a Fortune 500 provider of long-term healthcare services, has selected Cisco MDS 9509 Multilayer directors to upgrade its SANs. Headquartered in Louisville, Ky., -- with 73 hospitals, 245 nursing centers, 39 institutional pharmacies and 51,000 employees -- Kindred Healthcare is one of the nation's largest long-term healthcare providers. The main data center is responsible for storing all the data for Kindred's corporate applications, including enterprise resource planning, digitalized patient records and clinical applications while also providing centralized data backup.

In planning its SAN upgrade, Kindred's IT staff considered their current SAN switch vendor but also decided to look at other possibilities, including Cisco. The Kindred storage team planned and configured a design to eliminate the existing 26 switches and consolidate into two new SANs based on Cisco MDS 9509 Multilayer directors.

Ikea picks DataCore
DataCore today announced that it has won over Ikea as a major customer. DataCore, together with its provider Kramer & Crew GmbH in Germany, have already begun deploying storage systems for Ikea in Europe. DataCore's SANmelody disk server software running on Dell PC servers will manage, protect and virtualize Ikea's data storage and allow it to be supported from a single central location in Werne, Germany.

Hitachi names CEO
Hitachi Data Systems announced the appointment of Dave Roberson as president and CEO. Mr. Roberson, who currently serves as president and chief operating officer of Hitachi , succeeds Shinjiro Iwata as CEO. Mr. Iwata will take on the role of chief marketing officer for parent company Hitachi Ltd. In addition, the company announced that Minoru Kosuge, former division president of Hitachi Ltd.'s Disk Array Systems Division, has been promoted to chief operating officer of Hitachi Data Systems from his current position as executive vice president and chief storage architect. These organizational changes will be effective on April 1, 2006.

LSI to focus on storage, consumer markets
LSI Logic announced plans to focus its business on the information storage and consumer. The company has canceled its previously postponed plan for an initial public offering of its wholly-owned storage systems subsidiary, Engenio. LSI intends to fund additional research and devleopment investments in its focus markets by redirecting ongoing investments in its RapidChip platform ASIC technology, and by selling its ZSP digital signal processor unit, which provides licensed ASIC technology to the broadband and wireless communications markets.

Digi-Data acquires Big Vault
Digi-Data announced that it has acquired the assets of Big Vault Storage Technologies, a provider of online storage and collaboration services. The acquisition will allow Digi-Data to offer a managed storage service. Big Vault is currently sold to PC users through resellers, including Verizon Online, which offers the service to its DSL subscribers as "My Storage Place."

TelaScience, San Diego State pick Agami
Agami announced that its AIS3004 NAS device was selected by San Diego State University's (SDSU) Visualization Center and TelaScience to coordinate emergency first responders and identify travel routes to disaster stricken areas. The storage and retrieval operations performed by Agami's product aided SDSU and TelaScience with the Geographic Information Systems and geospatial imagery for Hurricane Katrina relief efforts. The AIS3004 was deployed at SDSU through The Pinnacle Group, one of Agami's reseller partners.

Unitrends adds Exchange protection
Unitrends announced Continuous Exchange Protection, which will allow the recovery of e-mail from crashed or failed servers from server-level failure down to individual messages as part of its data protection services offering at no additional charge.

BlueArc claims performance record
BlueArc announced that its Titan 2200 Storage System has received official SPEC SFS benchmark results showing the new Titan doubled the company's previous performance record for single- and dual-node system performance. The 2200 was clocked at a single server performance of 98,131 SPEC SFS97_R1.v3 ops/sec, with an overall response time of 2.34 ms. These results effectively double performance when compared to single and dual configurations of BlueArc's first-generation Titan storage system, which achieved 50,858 SPEC SFS ops/sec in November of 2004.

EqualLogic certified by Symantec
EqualLogic announced it has received certification in the Symantec Technology Enabled Program. EqualLogic is among the first iSCSI SAN vendors to achieve certification in the program, which is designed to offer mutual customers joint support.

Exanet partners with Newnet
Israeli NAS software company Exanet announced that French storage system manufacturer Newnet has selected its ExaStore software for its new NAS product line NEXA-6300.
