Daily compilation of storage news:

IBM brushes up SRM tool
IBM released version 3.1 of its TotalStorage Productivity Center, saying that the storage resource management (SRM) tool was completely overhauled and "more tightly integrated."

What it means by "integrated" is that what had previously been a three-pronged tool with separate databases for monitoring disk, data and switching fabric on a SAN, has now been brought together in one database and application. The tool will also support the IBM DS4000 (previous versions already worked with the 6000 and 8000) and will use the SMI-S standard to manage heterogeneous arrays.

Where previously the tool could manage storage capacity and availability on the SAN, the new tool will also assess performance. With a single database, the software can also cross-reference information between the three categories, and includes a new "topology viewer" that maps out the entire infrastructure. Finally, version 3.1 will also allow for "role management" with different use profiles and permissions -- for example, the ability to view performance data, but not to make changes to the configuration.

ADIC expands VTL capacity
ADIC announced that it has expanded the maximum capacity of its Pathlight VX 650 VTL up to 71.5 terabytes (TB) from approximately 50 TB in previous editions. The Pathlight now also includes support for the new Scalar i500 midrange tape library.

Brocade 4 Gbps used in new HP EVA
Brocade announced that its technology will be integrated into the new HP StorageWorks EVA 4 Gbps disk array, and that the complete line of Brocade-based 4 Gbps SAN switches and directors is now available directly from HP.

Tandberg releases low-end LTO
Tandberg Data Corp. announced general availability of an open standard LTO tape drive with a 5.25-inch half-height drive design for under $1,000. Designed for network, workstation and desktop backup, the Tandberg 220LTO half-height tape drive will be marketed to small and midsized business customers.

Percept offers SAS, SATA testing
Percept Technology Labs announced new services to test SATA and SAS interfaces at both the command-level and protocol-level, as well as interoperability testing. With command-level testing, Percept runs systematic tests to verify that all required and optional commands are being communicated and executed properly; protocol-level testing verifies that systems recognize and recover link-level exceptions as they occur; interoperability testing checks that SATA and SAS devices function correctly.

HighPoint releases RAID controller
HighPoint Technologies Inc. announced availability of the RocketRAID 2310 PCI-Express x4 SATA II RAID Controller for entry level servers, NAS and high-end workstations.

Sun names new board of directors member
Sun Microsystems announced that Robert Finocchio has been elected to the company's board of directors, effective immediately. Finocchio, a 30-year veteran in the financial and high-tech industries, will also join Sun's audit committee and qualifies as an "audit committee financial expert" under SEC rules. Finocchio also serves on the boards of Altera Corp., CaseCentral, Echelon Corp., Intransa and Silver-Peak Systems.
