Adaptec aims higher with 500 Series
Adaptec Inc. introduced the latest in its departmental NAS product line, the Snap Server 500 Series, an addition to its Snap Server 1000, 2000 and 4000 series that offers higher throughput and capacity.

The 500 series, and the 550 in particular, are aimed at the higher end of the market than previous Snap Server products, according to Mark Pollard, vice president of marketing for the Storage Systems and Solutions Group at Adaptec.

The 510 and 520 products, based on SATA disks with SATA II capabilities, including hot-swappable drives, offer 700 Mbps throughput, twice the performance of the previous highest performing box. The Snap Server 510 offers capacity of 640 GB; the 520 up to 2 terabytes (TB); and the 550, 1.2 TB using SAS disks. The boxes also use 64-bit AMD Opteron processors and will support SAS or SATA drives.

The 500 series also supports both cross-platform file sharing and block-level data access via iSCSI. The products are bundled with BakBone's NetVault backup software, which includes a 500 GB virtual tape library license.

The Snap Server 510 and 520 are currently available through distribution partners. Pricing for the Snap Server 510 starts at $3,595; the 520 at $4,595 for 1 TB; and $6,395 for 2 TB. The 550 will be available in March with pricing starting at $9,995.

Adaptec also announced the availability of continuous data protection (CDP) software for automatically backing up files from client desktops or laptops to a network-attached Snap Server. Called StorAssure Personal Edition, the software currently works only with Windows and does not include centralized management of backed up files on the target.

"We're looking into that for a future release," Pollard said.

While not as advanced as some of its enterprise counterparts, StorAssure CDP is simple and user-friendly, [says who?], including configuration wizards, "rules" which allow end users to specify the types of files to protect, automatic offline logging, network detection, and battery saving features for laptop users. If a laptop is lost or files are accidentally deleted or corrupted, StorAssure guides the user through the process of recovering files and restoring data.

Pricing for StorAssure Personal Edition is US$35 per Windows client. Adaptec is also offering a 45-day free trial of the software through its online stores and resellers.
