HP reports storage earnings slump
Despite its revamped product lines (see Users give HP EVA plans the nod, Feb. 14), HP reported last night that its storage sales are down 9% from $932 million to $852 million, quarter over quarter. Revenue from its services business also fell slightly and Hewlett-Packard Co. (HP) said it cut 1,800 jobs in the quarter as part of a plan to reduce its workforce by 15,300.

HP's software overall, now a $304 million business this quarter, reported an operating profit of $9 million, or 3% of revenue, compared with a loss of $38 million in the prior-year period. HP's overall revenues of $1.2 billion also represented an increase of 30%.

Network Appliance Inc. (NetApp) also reported results, beating Wall Street's estimates with a total revenue of $537 million in the third quarter of 2006, an increase of 30% compared to revenues of $412.7 million for the same period a year ago. This is an increase of 11% compared to $483.1 million in the prior quarter.
