HP reports storage earnings slump
Despite its revamped product lines (see Users give HP EVA plans the nod, Feb. 14), HP reported last night that its storage sales are down 9% from $932 million to $852 million, quarter over quarter. Revenue from its services business also fell slightly and Hewlett-Packard Co. (HP) said it cut 1,800 jobs in the quarter as part of a plan to reduce its workforce by 15,300.
On a brighter note, the company reported a 34% increase in revenue for OpenView software year over year as part of its quarterly earnings report yesterday. HP's software overall, now a $304 million business this quarter, reported an operating profit of $9 million, or 3% of revenue, compared with a loss of $38 million in the prior-year period. HP's overall revenues of $1.2 billion also represented an increase of 30%.
Network Appliance Inc. (NetApp) also reported results, beating Wall Street's estimates with a total revenue of $537 million in the third quarter of 2006, an increase of 30% compared to revenues of $412.7 million for the same period a year ago. This is an increase of 11% compared to $483.1 million in the prior quarter. NetApp gained storage market share over its competitors but security subsidiary Decru still accounted for less than 1% of revenue.
QLogic to buy InfiniBand maker
Fibre Channel host bus adapter maker QLogic Corp. announced that it will acquire PathScale Inc. for about $109 million in cash and outstanding unvested stock options. The acquisition is expected to close in early April. PathScale designs and develops system area network fabric connectivity components for clustered systems and high-speed applications.
Arkeia does Windows
Arkeia announced Disaster Recovery for Windows software, which allows data recovery after system failure for customers using its Network Backup software. The software allows backup and recovery onto a CD, USB or network drive. The new Arkeia Disaster Recovery for Windows supports Windows 2000 and higher. Iomega ships 1M REV Disks
Iomega Corp. announced that one million of its REV 35 GB disks have shipped in the last 22 months. The removable hard drive, targeted toward small and midsized businesses, is currently shipping in ATAPI, external USB 2.0, FireWire, SCSI, SATA and multidisk autoloader configurations.
Spurs pick StoneFly
StoneFly Inc. announced that the San Antonio Spurs organization has deployed its Backup Advantage IP SAN-based disk-to-disk backup system to manage its ticketing, event planning and payroll data.
NeoScale nabs security certifications
NeoScale Systems Inc. announced that the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology has awarded FIPS 140-2 Level 3 Certificate #621 to NeoScale's CryptoStor Tape 702/704 tape security appliance. The Federal Information Processing Standard (FIPS) is an internationally recognized standard for cryptography products.
SNIA announces conferences in Europe
The Storage Networking Industry Association (SNIA) Europe announced that Sweden and Denmark will be the locations for its second annual SNIA Europe Academy, March 29-30. The Academy, a series of regional one-day events, has been created to educate European end users and resellers about storage.
Archivas, Contoural plan CAS seminars
Fixed-content archiving startup Archivas Inc. and compliance consultants Contoural Inc. announced they will present a series of seminars that will discuss how to implement a content-addressed storage archive. The seminars, aimed at compliance officers, corporate legal teams and IT executives, will take place during February and March 2006 in Irvine, Calif., (Feb. 21); Jersey City, N.J., (Feb. 28); and Chicago (March 1).
