Index Engines announces NDMP support
Index Engines announced a Network Data Management Protocol (NDMP) controller with support for both Network Appliance (NetApp) and EMC Celerra devices. The Index Engines NDMP controller can schedule and initiate data transfers from up to 64 NAS devices simultaneously and index unstructured data at speeds up to 60 MB per second (MBps). Each appliance can index up to 64 million files and can be clustered to support environments containing over 4 billion files. The Index Engines appliance with NDMP support is available immediately. The entry level appliance is priced at $29,500.

UltraBac brings dissimilar hardware restore
UltraBac Software released UBDR Gold v3.0, which includes dissimilar hardware restore. Dissimilar hardware restore allows users to restore machines on different hardware in the event of a failure, instead of having to maintain identical hardware spares. Other enhancements to the software include expanded virtual machine restore support and online index-based restore capability. Pricing for UBDR Gold starts at $995 per server.

Boeing goes for ToughDisk
Formation Inc. announced today that its ToughDisk 7204 Rugged Hard Disk has been selected by the Communication Systems-East (CS-East) division of L-3 Communications to provide storage for Boeing's P-8A Multi-mission Maritime Aircraft program. The P-8A program will replace the U.S. Navy's fleet of P-3C Orion maritime patrol aircraft with next generation maritime surveillance aircraft. As part of the P-8A system development and demonstration phase, L-3 CS-East will provide the acoustic data recorder, digital video recorder and network system storage from its Strategic/Tactical Airborne Recorder product line. Formation is under contract to CS-E to modify its ToughDisk product to meet specific program requirements.

Peer Software upgrades PeerSync
Peer Software Inc. announced the release of PeerSync 7.2.2, the company's flagship backup/synchronization software. The new version expanded reporting, "failsafe" operations in the event of connection failures, improved multi-threading, added revision control and enhanced options for the management of open files.

WD shipping big SATA
Western Digital Corp. (WD) announced it is shipping its new 500 GB SATA WD Caviar SE16 desktop-class hard drives. The drives also boast 7,200 RPM performance with 300 MBps transfer rate, 16 MB cache and Native Command Queuing.
