Daily compilation of storage news:

HP defends AppIQ
Since IBM announced its open source storage resource management (SRM) initiative, dubbed Aperi, at Storage Networking World last week, the industry has been buzzing over the consequences for HP and its $280 million acquisition of SRM startup AppIQ. HP held a conference call with press and analysts this week to reinforce its own open standards program, OpenIQ.

"Open source is not open standards, and open source does not mean free or low cost to a customer," said Ash Ashutosh, founder of AppIQ and now chief technology officer of HP's storage management software group. "You still have to go build a solution. The question is, what works? One works, and the other...we don't know yet."

HP's approach is to offer integrated storage and server management software prepackaged and ready to go, whereas IBM is creating the middleware and betting that customers will want to customize, and pick and choose management applications to run on top.

Frank Harbist, vice president and general manager of HP's storage software group said the two programs might not be mutually exclusive and that anything that furthers open standards is good for customers.
