Global namespace software startup NuView Inc. has announced Data on Demand, a new product that allows administrators to recover files faster than traditional methods.
In a disaster recovery scenario in which a primary storage volume is lost, the software, which is now entering beta testing, presents an image of the file system for the user from a secondary volume. When the user tries to access a file, the software pulls that specific file from the secondary volume -- meaning that the user doesn't have to wait for the entire volume to be restored to access files.
"Recovery time for a 1 terabyte (TB) volume usually takes from hours to days," said Kathryn Craig, director of marketing for NuView. "This software can bring it down to minutes."
According to Craig, Data on Demand will also restore the entire volume in the background while also recovering specific files. Users can also create policies to dictate which files are brought back first.
"Bottom line, it's going to give users the perception of a faster restore because they can see the whole file system virtually, almost immediately, and the system is smart enough to know that if anyone's accessing the file system, it should go and get the file right away," said Mike Fisch, analyst with the Clipper Group.
The software is for recovery only. Users must still have a separate backup method. NuView said it is working to integrate Data on Demand with backup vendors, including Veritas Software Corp., Microsoft, IBM, Sun Microsystems Inc., FalconStor Software and EMC Corp.
According to Laura DuBois, research director for storage software at IDC, the product will be useful to environments with a lot of user-level restores. "Forty user-level file-level restores in a week can be a very complex, cumbersome task for IT to manage," she said. "This gives you the ability to recover data without having to go to IT."
