SGI aims for the midrange
Silicon Graphics Inc. announced rack-mounted servers and storage systems aimed at smaller businesses. The SGI Altix 330 server, a 1U Linux box, will be available for under $7,000. The SGI InfiniteStorage S330 storage array is priced at $12,599, which is less than half the price of previous SGI storage offerings. It starts at 2 terabytes (TB) and scales to 16 TB and is a dual-controller system that can be daily-chained together in a cluster. It can be deployable in DAS, SAN or NAS environments.
Sun to OEM Emulex HBAs
Sun Microsystems Inc. will brand, sell and support LightPulse Fibre Channel (FC) HBAs from Emulex Corp. with Solaris environments. Sun is also including the Emulex-based Fibre Channel Architecture (FCA) driver with its StorEdge SAN Foundation software. The Sun StorEdge HBAs, Models SG-XPCI1FC-EM2 and SG-XPCI2FC-EM2, are based on Emulex 2 Gbps LP10000 family of single and dual-channel HBAs.
U.K. law firm uses Asigra
Fisher Meredith, a London- based litigation law firm, is using D2D backup and disaster recovery software serviced by remote online backup service Oncore IT, using Asigra Inc.'s Televaulting software, according to an announcement by Asigra. The Oncore product remotely backs up data every day or as scheduled, and transmits the backup data off site via an IP WAN to another Oncore IT location. Previously, the firm had used tape-based backup.
Nvidia uses Riverbed Technology
Media communications device maker Nvidia Corp. has selected Riverbed Technology Inc.'s Steelhead WAFS appliances for use in its remote offices. Nvidia is headquartered in Santa Clara, Calif., and employs more than 2,000 people worldwide. Riverbed, which began shipping product in May of 2004, has hit the 200th customer mark.
CA to license CaminoSoft HSM software
Computer Associates International Inc.(CA) and CaminoSoft Corp. today announced that CA will license CaminoSoft's Managed Server Hierarchical Storage Management (HSM) for Windows software. The software is a policy-based application that automatically migrates seldom-accessed files from higher to lower cost media. CA will market the software as BrightStor HSM this fall.
Sanrad and emBoot offer iSCSI diskless boot
Sanrad Inc. and emBoot Inc. have released a joint product that allows storage administrators to use Sanrad's iSCSI V-Switch in conjunction with emBoot's netBoot/i software to boot servers off the IP SAN using any standard Ethernet network. The Sanrad and emBoot product works with several types of storage, including FC, FC SAN and SCSI.
