Storage Clips: EMC ports software to Sun Solaris 10

EMC ports software to Sun Solaris 10
EMC Corp. will port its PowerPath, Legato NetWorker, Documentum and Smarts software to Sun Microsystems Inc.'s Solaris 10 operating system. Sun also announced an extension of its deal to resell EMC's Legato Networker as Sun-branded backup and recovery product. Sun confirmed that Veritas Software Inc. is still its "preferred supplier" of backup software. The companies also reported that they have begun talks on further collaboration involving Sun's clustering software.

McData sells manufacturing plant to Solectron
McData Corp. will hand over its Lumberton, N.J., manufacturing facility, which it obtained as part of the company's recent acquisition of CNT, to Solectron Corp. Under the terms of the purchase agreement, Solectron, which already produces McData's Sphereon and Eclipse products, will assume production of all former CNT products. The closing is expected to take place next week.

iLumin unveils email discovery tool
ILumin Software Services Inc. announced a search and archiving tool for e-mail, Assentor Discovery 2.0, aimed toward compliance with legal investigation or audits. The product includes a "Legal Hold" feature, which allows a user to classify and protect e-mails from deletion. E-mails can also be automatically designated as "privileged" based on keywords, sender addresses or other elements of the e-mail message. Finally, messages can be "tagged" for association with specific case research or in-progress litigation.

Investors to vote on Symantec deal
Shareholders in Symantec Corp. will vote today on the company's proposed $11 billion takeover of Veritas Software Corp. The deal, which would be the biggest software merger in history, has been criticized by some analysts. A series of meetings between executives and shareholders of the two companies were held over the last week to mull the deal.
