Brocade preannounces shortfall
Brocade Communications Systems Inc. preannounced its second quarter revenue of $144 - $145 million and earnings per share of 7 cents, versus original guidance of $155 - $161 million and 8 - 9 cents. Management attributed the shortfall to greater-than-anticipated seasonality and extended sales cycles. However, analysts believe that some Brocade specific elements are at play here, such as increased competition from Cisco Systems Inc., and that the shortfall is not reflective of the overall storage networking market.
NetApp EVP of operations shifts role
Network Appliance Inc. announced that Jeffry R. Allen is giving up the post of executive vice president of business operations to join the company's board of directors. Allen will transition to the board from his current role in early June 2005. Allen's appointment brings the number on the NetApp board to 10.
Egenera installs Sepaton
Blade server company, Egenera Inc., has deployed Sepaton Inc.'s S2100 Virtual Tape Library and has cut its restore times from an average of six hours to less than one hour. Its backup times have been similarly compressed.
Egenera had relied on a traditional tape library system for backup and restore of its data center servers, with separate tape libraries supporting its corporate desktop environment. While the systems were adequate for performing nightly backups, restore performance was problematic, the company said.
FineGround offers price break
FineGround announced that its Velocity-FS Pilot Program will include special pricing and support for new Velocity-FS customers through June 2005. Velocity-FS is a single-appliance wide-area file services product that resides entirely in the data center and implements transformation techniques to deliver high-performance file services over WANs.
