Storage Clips: Maxxan adds midrange switch

Maxxan launches 16-64-port switch
Maxxan Systems Inc. will unveil Monday a new addition to its intelligent switch line. The MXV250 provides 16- to 64-ports and will ship in June. Maxxan has around 20 customers of its high-end MXV500, a 256-port switch with embedded snapshot, replication, virtualization and NAS services. On the low end, the company offers the SE100 and SE110 appliances that run the same applications, but without the switch. A spokesman for Maxxan said users will need to go through a forklift upgrade to migrate from the MXV250 to the MXV500, although all the software remains the same.

Winchester Systems thinks big
Winchester Systems Inc., introduced a large-scale SATA disk array targeted at data archiving applications. The SA-700 scales to 800 SATA disk drives and 320 terabytes (TB) of storage with 400 GB disks and 400 TB per system when 500 GB SATA drives become available.

LeWiz offers TOE card
LeWiz Communications Inc. announced its Magic2020 card with TCP/IP offload engine (TOE) on the 64-bit AMD Opteron processor. The TOE card is available for Linux 2.6 kernel in both 32- and 64-bit modes. It has been tested with Novell's SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 9 distribution.

Gartner: storage management market grew by 12% in 2004
According to analyst firm Gartner Group, the worldwide storage management market grew 12% to $5.6 billion in new license revenue last year, up from $5 billion in 2003. The storage resource management subset showed particularly strong growth with 30.8% growth, up to $612 million. The vendors dominating the space were, in order, EMC Corp., Veritas Software Corp., IBM and Computer Associates International Inc. However, Network Appliance Inc., showed the strongest revenue growth among leading vendors at 73.5%, and improved its standing from number seven to number five.
