RainStorage 4.5 will be used with EMC's NAS products, such as EMC Celerra, EMC Celerra NS Series gateways and EMC NetWin Windows-based file servers. Quantum adds hardware compression to virtual tape
Quantum Corp. announced enhancements to its DX-Series disk-based backup systems, such as virtual library partitioning, increased number of virtual cartridges and write load balancing. But Quantum said the most notable addition is the Optyon In-line Data Compression technology. This hardware-based compression is the first of its kind in the open systems virtual tape market, the company said.

Quantum added that the Optyon compression doubles the usable capacity of the DX30 and the DX100 systems and does not degrade performance like compression done with software.

Optyon is based on compression technologies used in tape drives and automated libraries, and is enabled by users through a license key.

Atempo Inc. announced that it has tested and qualified the EMC Clariion Disk Library disk-to-disk backup system for use with Time Navigator, Atempo's data protection software.
