HP rolls out disaster recovery software for EVA HP has announced disaster recovery software for its Enterprise Virtual Array (EVA) midrange arrays. The family of products, called HP StorageWorks Business Continuance Software Solutions include Metrocluster, Continentalclusters and Cluster Extension EVA for HPUX and Windows environments. Most mid-range failover products only replicate and failover either the server cluster or the storage. HP's latest offering provides failover for the entire site -- server cluster and storage -- via a single product. Business Continuance Software Solutions integrate with the operating system cluster service and with array-based replication failover technology (Continuous Access EVA) to enable full site failover when necessary. Metrocluster reaches 260 km and supports up to 16 HP 9000 and Integrity servers. Continentalclusters enables long distances between sites and supports up to 32 HP 9000 and Integrity servers per license. Cluster Extension EVA is the host-based software that integrates Continuous Access EVA remote mirroring. "There really hasn't been anything like this for this tier of the market. The only option was to buy a high-end array," said Kyle Fitze, director of marketing, HP StorageWorks SAN division. Disaster recovery startup InMage Inc. points out that this product is good for HP customers but offers no heterogeneity for users with mixed environments. "For mid-tier customers bandwidth is also an issue, it still costs a lot," said Anup Tirumala, president and COO of InMage. To solve this problem InMage's replication software provides compression to pack more data together as it is transferred and to relieve the processor on the host. InMage's compression component resides out of the data path in an appliance. "Otherwise performance crawls to 50% on the host," said Tirumala. HP's products will be available by the end of February and will be priced depending on the capacity being replicated. Avax releases new encrypted tape drives Data protection vendor Avax International announced the availability of plug-and-play tape units with high security data encryption. Based on the Paranoia family of in-line magnetic tape encryption units, Avax SafeTape units ensure tape security to protect data and also to comply with government regulations. The SafeTape hardware units are designed to encrypt/decrypt data on the fly. The units utilize the 3DES2 data encryption, where the data is split into two streams and each stream is encrypted separately with user-unique encryption blocks. After encryption, the two streams of data are merged before the data is written to tape. The encryption process operates in real time, with no impact on the drive speed or performance, the company said.
SafeTape units are compatible with all major backup software packages and operating systems -- if the drive is supported, then SafeTape is also supported. The units are offered with AIT-4, LTO or SDLT tape drives, and are available with SCSI or Fibre Channel interfaces. Prices are from $18,326 to $24,343 depending on the drive and interface type. EMC Smarts buy a done deal EMC Corp. announced that it has completed the acquisition of Smarts, a privately-held provider of event automation and network systems management software. The deal was agreed upon on December 21, 2004, and was priced at approximately $260 million in cash. Smarts will now be integrated into the EMC Software Group. Smarts will enable EMC storage management software to figure out root cause storage network problems and present a plan of action. In addition to extending the Smarts technology to such industries as healthcare, financial services and telecommunications services, EMC also will make Smarts' technology available to existing EMC partners for integration. Atempo's Time Navigator certified with STK tape library Atempo, Inc. and StorageTek, (Storage Technology Corp.), announced the completion of testing and certification of Atempo's Time Navigator with StorageTek's new Streamline SL500 modular library system. Time Navigator was tested with the StreamLine SL500 modular library system on a variety of popular operating systems including Solaris 9, AIX, HP-UX as well as Windows 2000 and Windows 2003. Overland revenue, net income down Overland Storage, Inc. reported revenue and net income for its fiscal 2005 second quarter and six-month period ended December 31, 2004. Revenue for the fiscal 2005 second quarter was $62.5 million compared with $67.8 million for the same period last year. Net income for the fiscal 2005 second quarter was $2.6 million compared with $3.5 million for the fiscal 2004 second quarter. Seagate adds new American distributor Computech International (CTI) announced it has been engaged by hard drive maker Seagate Technology as a new distribution partner in the United States. CTI will carry Seagate enterprise hard drive products and high-capacity desktop PC hard drive products. These product lines include 2.5 and 3.5-inch Seagate hard drives for PCs, servers and data centers, with SATA, Ultra ATA, SAS, SCSI and Fibre-Channel interfaces.
