NetApp, Red Hat partner on iSCSI
Red Hat, Inc. and Network Appliance, Inc. will jointly develop and deploy iSCSI in Red Hat Linux environments. Both Red Hat and NetApp have committed to supporting the iSCSI software initiator in the upcoming Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3 Update 4 as well as future Red Hat Enterprise Linux versions based on the new 2.6 Linux kernel. Additionally, the Red Hat Global File System (GFS) and Cluster Suite are now supported in NetApp storage systems.
SAS plugfest draws record-breaking crowd
The University of New Hampshire InterOperability Laboratory (UNH-IOL) and the SCSI Trade Association (STA) announced that the largest-ever multi-company SAS plugfest to date brought more than 100 engineers together to fine-tune their company's storage products and promote interoperability between Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) storage devices. Sponsored by STA, the third and final plugfest of 2004 was held at UNH-IOL during the first week of November. Most attendees tested components -- chips, boards, hard disk drives, cables and connectors -- that will be sold to OEMs. Among the storage companies that attended the November Plugfest were Adaptec, Dell, EqualLogic, Finisar, Fujitsu, HP, Hitachi, Intel, LSI Logic, Maxtor, NEC, PMC-Sierra and Seagate.
EMC to resell mainframe and DWDM products
Bus-Tech, Inc. announced its Mainframe Appliance for Storage (MAS) tape controller is now available through the EMC Select partner program. Users will now be able to purchase complete mainframe tape-on-disk products for EMC Centera content addressed storage (CAS) or EMC Celerra network attached storage (NAS) directly from EMC. EMC will also resell Ciena Corp.'s CN 200 Storage Extension Platform and ONLINE Metro Multiservice DWDM switch to users looking to extend storage area networks, remote disk mirroring or remote back-up over long distances.
NeoPath unveils File Director appliance
NeoPath Networks Inc has taken the wraps off its File Director appliance that users to virtualize all file servers and NAS devices irrespective of vendor or operating system -- by decoupling the physical location of a file from the file's name and path as seen by the application or user. Users no longer need to know which particular file server holds their data, and administrators no longer need to be limited by the constraints of existing servers, increasing utilization while reducing management costs. NeoPath's File Director is priced starting at $29,995 for a single unit and $49,995 for a two-system cluster. It competes with Acopia Networks Inc's switch and a software only solution from NuView Inc.
Plasmon releases desktop UDO drive
Plasmon, a provider of data archival products, announced the second generation of its standalone desktop UDO (Ultra Density Optical) drive. Aimed at SMB and department-level data archiving as well as dedicated applications, such as email archiving, the new Plasmon UDO desktop drive features drag and drop capabilities for better ease of use and expanded operating system support. Microsoft Windows 2000 Server and Professional, Windows Server 2003, and Windows XP are all supported.
Princeton Softech updates Oracle database archiving
Database archiving vendor Princeton Softech announced the general availability of Archive for Servers Oracle Applications Edition Release 2.1. This release expands "out-of-the-box" archiving support for Oracle applications including Human Resources Payroll and Project Costing and Billing and also expands the availability of low-cost storage options to all supported modules.
Agere ships serial chip
Agere Systems has introduced a chip that enables disk drive and system manufacturers to design products across any serial standard with throughput up to 6.25 gigabits-per-second (Gbits/sec) between devices. The new serializer-deserializer (SerDes) chip addresses the proliferation of serial interface technology across multiple applications, from emerging Serial ATA (SATA) and PCI Express standards used in PCs to Serial-Attached SCSI (SAS), Fibre Channel and Gigabit Ethernet solutions in enterprise backplane and storage area networks. All of these market segments require the use of SerDes technology to drive serial connectivity.
Intelenet taps EqualLogic PS Series arrays
EqualLogic Inc. announced that InteleNet Communications, a provider of on-demand managed hosting services, is using EqualLogic's storage area network (SAN) products as the core of one of its foundation services. EqualLogic's PS Series arrays are supporting a number of hosted services, allowing InteleNet to react to user requirements by offering computing resources on demand. InteleNet said that it chose the EqualLogic PS Series arrays for their modular flexibility and built-in data protection capabilities such as snapshots and replication.
