Daily compilation of storage news:

QLogic and McData co-develop embedded switch
QLogic Corp. and McData Corp. announced that they will co-develop an embedded Fibre Channel switch for blade servers as part of an exclusive multi-year alliance. The server-embedded and McData-interoperable switch blade will complement McData directors, fabric switches and multi-protocol storage area network routers. The companies say that this will give customers another option to extend a McData fabric from the core of the SAN to the blade servers at the edge. The embedded blade server switch is scheduled for OEM qualification in McData's fiscal fourth quarter of 2004 and will be sold through select QLogic and McData OEMs.

Seagate sets Cheetahs free
Disc drive vendor Seagate Technology has begun worldwide shipping of its new Cheetah 15K.4 drives. The company claims that the Cheetah 15K.4 is the best price-per-performance disk drive in its class for IT professionals that require the most reliable and fastest I/O transactions. According to Seagate, the Cheetah 15K.4 delivers 30% more I/O per second and 20%t faster response times than 3.5-inch 10K-RPM drives. As a result, the 15K.4 enables higher performance while using fewer drives, and fewer drives means lower total-cost of ownership. With this announcement, the Cheetah 15K.4 now joins the 10K-RPM Cheetah 10K.7, which began shipping last month.

European television network taps FalconStor software
FalconStor Software Inc., a developer of network storage software, announced that M6, Europe's television network, has implemented FalconStor's IPStor Enterprise Edition software to improve storage management costs and data availability by centralizing the administration of its storage resources. Transitioning M6's storage environment from direct-attached storage (DAS) to a SAN during deployment of IPStor enabled storage administration to be achieved from a centralized location. IPStor now provisions the television network's storage resources as block-based storage over a Fibre Channel SAN, thus improving the usage of available storage capacity.

Mellanox releases product kit for Infiniband switches
Mellanox Technologies Ltd., a provider of performance business computing interconnects, announced the industry's first manufacturing-ready product design kits (PDKs) for InfiniBand switches, which provide OEMs time to market. Mellanox introduced PDKs for both mid-range 24-port and high-density 144-port InfiniBand switches. The PDKs come with all the necessary hardware, software, manufacturing information and documentation to allow OEMs to reduce the investment required to develop industry-leading InfiniBand switches. The switch designs are ideal for clustered database, communications, storage and high- performance computing applications.
