EMC acquires Allocity
Barely has the ink had time to dry on its acquisition of Dantz Development Corp. and EMC has snuck in another deal to boost its presence in the small business marketplace. For approximately $10 million, it has acquired Allocity Inc., which sells storage management and provisioning software for Microsoft Exchange users running EMC Clariion storage.

Microsoft's relatively recent support for SAN and NAS storage within its products has been a good thing for users, but the functionality it offers is still pretty basic, leaving room for vendors like Allocity to fill in the gaps. For example, expanding LUNs, carrying out mailbox-level restores, choosing RAID levels, sizing log volumes and over provisioning are all problems users face in dealing with storage management for Exchange.

Allocity's product handles SAN management from within the Exchange System Manager and carries out automated provisioning and rapid backup and restore. It also handles space utilization (RAID and volume layouts), simple failover (without the need for expensive clustering support) and capacity planning. Exchange users with between 500 and 10,000 mailboxes are likely to be the most interested in this product.

CNT boasts FICON success
CNT said its UltraNet Multi-Service Director (UMD) has seen significant success in the FICON director market in its first two months of availability. A large financial company in Europe ordered two fully-populated 256-port UMD-Model 16's to augment its existing FC/9000 FICON environment. United Airlines is in the process of migrating its entire ESCON- based mainframe environment over to FICON, using the UMD and one of the largest non-military agencies in the U.S. Federal government selected the UMD to expand the capacity of its FICON environment, CNT said.

Emulex gets certified with Unisys
Emulex Corp.'s LightPulse LP10000DC dual channel and midrange LP1050 PCI-X Fibre Channel HBAs have been certified by Unisys Corp. for use with its ES7000 enterprise servers. Integration into the ES7000 IA64-based enterprise servers is immediate.

Exanet promotes benchmark numbers
Exanet Inc. has achieved what it claims is a record-breaking operations-per-second (OPS) result on the industry-standard SPEC SFS benchmark with its NAS product. The time, 71,185 OPS were reached on a two-node cluster, and 139,061 OPS were reached on a four-node cluster with ORT (operation response time) of 1.21 and 1.13, respectively.
