Maxtor reports $58.3M loss
Maxtor Corp. announced a third-quarter net loss on a GAAP basis of $90.6 million, or $0.36 per share. Included in the GAAP net loss was $27.2 million of severance and facilities-related restructuring charges and a $5.1 million charge for the amortization of intangible assets. On a non-GAAP basis, excluding these charges, Maxtor reported a net loss of $58.3 million, or $0.23 per share. Intransa scales up
IP SAN startup Intransa Inc. has launched a new version of its product geared for mid-sized companies. The IP5500 uses a faster processor (an Intel Xeon 2.5GHz) than the IP5000 to improve failover times and throughput. It scales up to 48 TB, starting at $42,000 for 2 TB and $48,000 for 4 TB. Capacity and processors can be purchased separately, so each additional 4 TB costs $16,000 with no additional software costs and each additional controller costs $7,000. Intransa will launch an even bigger system in the first quarter of 2005, which will hit 100 TB.

Its production flow control system monitors the progress of each component at each stage of the manufacturing process, increasing ordering, tracking and overall manufacturing efficiency.

LSI Logic announces 8-port SAS controller
LSI Logic Corp. expanded its Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) product family today by announcing that OEM customers are now sampling an 8-port SAS controller IC, the LSISAS1068. The controller IC is interoperable with the SASx12 expander for backplane and storage applications. LSI Logic has also tested with all major SAS and Serial ATA (SATA) HDD vendors to ensure interoperability with external JBOD and RAID systems. "Users are looking for different disk drive options for tiered storage and we have seen SATA have great success in the market," said Tony Asaro, senior analyst at the Enterprise Strategy Group. "The compatibility of SAS and SATA should ensure the success of both drive technologies balancing cost, capacity, performance and reliability."
