EMC reports 37% rise in Q3 profit
EMC Corp. reported a third-quarter net income of $218 million, or 9 cents per diluted share, compared with $159 million, or 7 cents per diluted share in the year-earlier quarter. Revenue rose 34% to $2.03 billion from $1.51 billion. The company attributed the 37% rise in profit to sales of storage systems aimed at departmental level organizations -- its Clariion, Centera and NAS products grew over 50% in the third quarter from a year earlier, it said.

IBM disk-storage revenue declines
IBM reported that its third-quarter storage revenue was up 5% year over year, but the disk subsystem portion of this declined 1% year over year in spite of 27% year-over-year growth in the midrange disk category. Sales of IBM's high-end (Shark) fell dramatically, due to the company's product transition to its next-generation array (DS8000), which will start shipping in the month of December, according to Wall Street analysts. The company's tape business on the other hand, grew 17% year over year, an acceleration from the 13% year-over-year growth rate that this business posted in Q2. Analysts said IBM continues to gain share against StorageTek Corp. in the tape market.
