HP launches low-cost NAS iSCSI appliance
Hewlett Packard Co. is stepping up its efforts in the NAS market, after dropping to No. 2 on market share behind Dell in the second quarter. At the TechXNY show this week HP will unveil a fourth NAS appliance, the 500S, which is smallest of its NAS family and scales from 320 GB up to a 1 TB for $2249. The appliance is based on an HP Proliant server running Microsoft Windows Storage Server. For an extra $2000, users can buy an iSCSI feature pack to serve block data as well as traditional file and print data from a single NAS head. HP has qualified the product with Microsoft Exchange and SQL Server.


IBM extends OEM deal with McData
McData Corp. announced a renewed OEM agreement with IBM Corp. under which IBM will rebrand McData's Sphereon line of fabric switches as well as the Intrepid line of directors, extending the reach of these products.


Intradyn and Sony claim affordable SEC compliance for SMBs
Intradyn has extended its ComplianceVault e-mail archiving devices to work with Sony Electronics AIT WORM tape libraries, to give small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) e-mail capture, search, and retrieval capabilities, to help them simply and affordably comply with SEC, NYSE, and NASD e-mail retention and availability requirements.


RAID Inc. releases Phoenix arrays
RAID Inc. has unveiled its Phoenix line of enterprise storage systems, which support Fibre Channel and Serial ATA disk drives and offer remote replication, snapshot, storage virtualization, mirroring and storage provisioning features. Each storage module accommodates up to 15 hot-swap disk drives in a 3U form factor, offering storage capacities of 4.5 TB with Fibre Channel disk drives or 6 TB with Serial ATA disk drives.


BakBone gets Sun certified
BakBone Software announced that its NetVault NDMP data protection software is certified to support the Sun StorEdge 5210 NAS device.


Tacit gets lab tested
Tacit Networks announced that the University of New Hampshire's InterOperability Laboratory (UNH-IOL) has completed a 12-week analysis of its I-shared Wide Area File Services (WAFS) products. The UNH-IOL testing cycle was audited by industry analysts the Taneja Group, who evaluated Tacit's products in a number of operations scenarios, including single-user and multi-user performance, and reliability and usability testing.


AmeriVault adds XOsoft
Continuous recovery software provider XOsoft has signed a reseller deal with AmeriVault, a data recovery outsourcer. To accelerate large data recoveries, AmeriVault will incorporate XOsoft's WANSync and WANSyncHA solutions into its mobile HotBox recovery service and will begin hosting an online high availability solution by the end of the year. Through synchronization and continuous, real-time replication, WANSync technology maintains functional backups of entire database and application servers should they go down, the company claims.


Intransa goes to Asia
IP SAN system vendor Intransa, has signed a distribution agreement with Macnica Networks Corp., an IT supplier in Japan. With this relationship, Macnica Networks Corp. will serve as a strategic distributor for Intransa's products throughout Japan.
