Hitachi Data Systems Corp. (HDS) is a subsidiary of Hitachi Ltd. in Japan, a huge conglomerate with about $80 billion in sales. Its storage-systems group -- which includes HDS in Santa Clara, Calif., as well as a part of Hitachi that sells the same products in Japan -- is a fraction of the company, racking up $2.5 billion in sales in the year ended March 31, 2003.
According to the latest figures from Gartner Inc., Hitachi's external controller-based storage accounts for about 8% of the market, trailing EMC, which has a 21% market share, and HP, which has almost 19%.

Key hardware products from HDS include the latest monolithic array TagmaStore, the Lightning 9900v series of high-end systems, Thunder 9500v modular systems, a NAS blade for the Lightning and NAS gateways via a reseller deal with Network Appliance.
Looking at the software side of things, HDS offers in-system replication (ShadowImage), remote replication (TrueCopy), copy-on-write snapshot software, mirroring (FlashCopy), asynchronous remote replication across HDS and third-party systems (Universal Replicator), storage resource management (HiCommand) and support for Veritas and Commvault backup software.
