Storage software revenue declined year-over-year for the first time in more than five years in the first quarter, according to IDC's quarterly Worldwide Quarterly Storage Software Tracker.
"The storage software market had its first year-over-year decline in more than five years," said Michael Margossian, research analyst, storage software at Framingham, Mass.-based IDC. "The combination of the normally slow first quarter for most companies with the continued economic climate was displayed in this quarter's results. A majority of companies displayed either negative or very low year-over-year growth."
IDC said the device management, replication and infrastructure categories had the biggest declines. Symantec Corp. was the only vendor to grow revenue year-over-year, increasing 2.5%. Hewlett-Packard Co.'s 21.5% drop was the biggest fall, while market leader EMC Corp. slipped 14.5%.
Emulex calls stockholder meeting
Emulex Corp. said it will hold its 2009 annual stockholders meeting Nov. 19. The host bus adapter (HBA) vendor plans an open forum to discuss Broadcom Corp.'s tender offer and consent solicitation to acquire the company. Emulex is asking stockholders to reject Broadcom's request to meet with them as well as its offer of $9.25 per share.
Double-Take changes pricing model for Virtual Systems
Double-Take Software Inc. rolled out a new pricing and licensing model for its Double-Take for Virtual Systems that will allow customers to protect an unlimited number of virtual machines under one license. Double-Take customers using VMware vSphere 4 can license on the hypervisor level rather than the guest virtual machine level, so they no longer have to track and count individual workloads.
Western Digital rolls out 4 TB external hard drive for Macs
Western Digital Corp. released the My Book Studio Edition II dual-drive storage systems. The 4 TB external hard drive is compatible with the Apple Time Machine automatic backup feature, has a dual-drive RAID 0 configuration and supports four interfaces: eSATA, FireWire 800, FireWire 400 and USB 2.0.

NextIO closes $15M funding round
