QUESTION: Why would I invest in Fibre Channel SAN technology when I can achieve similar performance at a reduced...

cost using Gigabit Ethernet? Isn't TCP/IP bases storage networking the direction we're truly going and won't the adoption of iSCSI further that movement?

ANSWER: Well, there's a whole industry banking on your premise and I can point you to a host of vendors who would love to sign you up as both a beta site and reference. The truth is that iSCSI is a great promise for the future of storage but in today's reality, FC is a far more tested solution for complex storage environments. As to whether that will change and iSCSI will ultimately win – let's not forget the VHS/betamax fable. My crystal ball can't see that far.
