Dantz Development Corp., announced today a new version of its backup software, Retrospect Backup 5.0, for the Macintosh. Scheduled for release this fall, Retrospect 5.0 will run under both Mac OS X and Mac OS 9, protecting computers running all current Apple operating systems. Beginning with version 5.0, four products will make up the Retrospect Backup software family for the Macintosh. Customers who purchase Retrospect Backup 4.3 on or after July 18, 2001 will receive free upgrades to version 5.0. Customers may also upgrade to a higher level product for a discounted fee.

Chess DAX, a San Jose, Calif.-based manufacturer of network-attached data archives for CD and DVD, has announced a new entry in its SmartDAX Appliance product line. The SmartDAX 700 DVD-R Appliance is shipping this week and incorporates transparent file access through 10/100 Mbps or Gbps Ethernet interfaces. It is served by a Sun UltraSPARC II and Solaris based archive server, and features an internal 80G Byte RAID-5 that allows for caching of user data before being flushed to media and on subsequent reads from media. Additionally, the integrated DAXfs HSM archiving software (included with unit) transparently migrates written data to DVD media without changing file paths. The SmartDAX 700 DVD-R Appliance starts at $59,500.

Vixel Corp., Bothell, Wash., announced that it has completed certification of its Fibre Channel fabric switching products with Syncsort's Backup Express software. Syncsort's Backup Express software provides backup and restore functions for network attached storage (NAS) and storage area network (SAN) environments and is a certified product for use with Network Appliance's filer products. Vixel has a certified LAN Free backup solution in place with Network Appliance that allows NAS and SAN technologies to work together to boost performance for users of NetApp's filer products. Syncsort's Backup Express is a backup and restore solution for UNIX, Windows NT/2000 and NetWare operating systems.

Getting along

Crossroads Systems Inc., Austin, Texas, signed a collaborative agreement with Gadzoox Networks Inc., San Jose, Calif., to jointly support customers. The companies said they will conduct certification testing and exchange technical support information to ensure the interoperability of their respective storage products. The products covered in the agreement are the Crossroads FC to SCSI router products and Gadzoox Networks' Capellix Fibre Channel switch series and Slingshot 4218 2Gb open fabric switch.

Set sales

BlueArc Corp., San Jose, Calif., announced June sales of the Si7500 Storage Systems to Juniper Networks Inc., Extreme Networks Inc. and Altera Corp., meeting BlueArc's plans to ship product in the second quarter of 2001. The Si7500 Storage System has been tested and proven to run at gigabit rates. Juniper Networks, Extreme and Altera all took part in BlueArc's beta testing program and upon confirming the Si7500's features and benefits, deployed the Si7500 Storage System. The Si7500 is powered by BlueArc's SiliconServer architecture, a supercharged network attached storage (NAS) system.
