two versions of the 2U/16-bay, 64-bit NAS device -- the N21L for Linux and the N21W for Windows. Both are compatible with 2.5-inch SSDs or HDDs and can be configured as all-flash storage or with a mix of flash and HDD.
According to the company, the N21 devices are VMware NAS- and iSCSI-certified and feature dual Xeon E5 processors, up to 512 GB of memory, dual 10 GbE LAN ports and an Adaptec PCIe 3.0 RAID controller. The devices also offer six PCIe 3.0 expansion slots for add-on cards such as GbE or 10 GbE network interface controllers, and 16 Gb or 8 Gb Fibre Channel adapters for storage expansion.
Pricing starts at $8,034 for the device, with 32 GB of memory and four 120 GB SATA SSDs.
NAND flash revenue to reach $23.1 billion in 2013
According to a recent report from analytics firm IHS iSuppli, NAND flash revenue this year is forecast to reach $23.1 billion, up 14% from $20.2 billion last year. NAND usage in smartphones and tablets, gaming consoles and hybrid drives is driving the uptick in revenue.
Today's smartphones utilize more NAND flash than previous models. The report cites the Samsung Galaxy S4 as one example. The phone's Android 4.2 operating system and TouchWiz interface consume an extra gigabyte of NAND compared with its predecessor, the S III model.
Next-generation gaming consoles are also increasingly dependent on flash storage. The report says that Sony PlayStation and Microsoft Xbox consoles will continue to rely on traditional HDDs but will also feature options for USB-connected storage and possibly embedded flash.
Hybrid HDDs using onboard flash memory as cache are another growth area. According to the report, a new Western Digital hybrid drive offers an onboard 24 GB NAND cache from memory manufacturer SanDisk.
The report also predicts that flash manufacturers will gradually replace triple-level-cell NAND with 3D multi-level-cell flash starting early next year for mobile and compute platforms.
