Veritas Software Corp., Mountain View, Calif., will announce on Monday, enhancements to its NetBackup enterprise data protection line of products, including an expansion of its platform support, backup capabilities and scalability.

The Veritas NetBackup family consists of three major products, each aimed at different levels of the enterprise data protection market. The new version of the NetBackup product line, version 3.4, is an update on the original version 3.3, released in January.

The product family includes NetBackup DataCenter, designed to protect terabytes to petabytes of data in large enterprise environments; NetBackup BusinessServer, a backup and recovery solution for UNIX, Windows NT, and Windows 2000 workgroups and remote offices; and the recently announced NetBackup Professional, offering centralized data protection for desktops and mobile laptops located anywhere throughout the enterprise.

In Version 3.4 , each of the three offerings, DataCenter, BusinessServer, and Professional, now integrate complete Windows 2000 support with existing Windows NT compatibility, and offer client compression for Windows NT and Windows 2000 environments.

Version 3.4 also now supports not only the restoration of individual user mailboxes and folders within Microsoft Exchange, but individual messages as well. This allows the recovery of an individual's data without having to recover the entire Exchange information store. This enhanced Microsoft Exchange agent for NetBackup provides a GUI that allows the selection and scheduling of individual mailbox protection.

The new release of the high-end, NetBackup DataCenter extends its backup capabilities with FlashBackup snapshot technology, previously only available on NetBackup for Solaris, and now supported on the HP-UX operating system platform.

Vertias said this solution provides point-in-time backup of active servers without impacting online applications. DataCenter now also supports online, snapshot backup of Oracle databases via the Veritas NetBackup for Oracle Advanced BLI Agent, which integrates with the Storage Checkpoint technology of Database Edition for Oracle. This snapshot technology reduces backup windows and maintains system and network performance by backing up only changed data blocks of Oracle databases, Solaris, and HP-UX operating system platforms.

The midrange BusinessServer product, in addition to supporting Windows 2000, doubles client support to eight remote servers or workstations as well as making available a new optional agent, NetBackup NDMP, which delivers high-performance backup and recovery of NAS systems that utilize NDMP (Network Data Management Protocol).

Veritas' NetBackup Professional has been given delta filing capabilities, which according to Veritas, means that Professional increases system performance by only moving the changed blocks and not pulling giant files with redundant data across the network.

"Companies are increasingly looking to flexible enterprise data protection products that don't hinder access to data, and don't negatively impact the performance of their networks," said Steve Widen, research director, storage software, International Data Corporation. "The latest release of NetBackup addresses these needs by extending its multi-faceted, high-performance backup and restore capabilities to more platforms and a wider range of network topologies."

Version 3.4 of Veritas NetBackup DataCenter will be available in July and starts at $5,000 for Windows NT platforms and $10,000 for UNIX platforms. NetBackup BusinesServer will be available in July as well, and starts at $1,995. NetBackup Professional is available immediately for $495.
