Storage roundup: Texas Memory releases flash-based SSD RamSan-630

Texas Memory's latest RamSan SSD system hits 500,000 IOPS; EMC qualifies Emulex CNAs for 10 GbE iSCSI and FCoE; Western Digital has 10,000 rpm 6-gig SATA drives for blade servers.

Texas Memory Systems Inc. has rolled out the TB single-level cell (SLC) flash-based RamSan-630 solid-state drive (SSD) system with 500,000 IOPS in a 3U enclosure designed for access to high-volume database storage.

The RamSan-630 uses 10 4 Gbps Fibre Channel links for 4 GBps of aggregated bandwidth for the RamSan-630, and Texas Memory said it will add support for InfiniBand and 8 Gbps Fibre Channel for 8 GBps of aggregated bandwidth later this year.

EMC, Emulex connect on 10 GbE storage adapters

EMC Corp. has qualified Emulex Corp. OneConnect Universal Converged Network Adapters (UCNAs) for 10 GbE iSCSI and Fibre Channel over Ethernet (FCoE) connectivity for its Clariion, Celerra and Symmetrix storage systems. EMC is offering the 10 GbE OneConnect iSCSI and FCoE adapters through its EMC Select reseller program.

Western Digital launches 6 Gbps 10,000 rpm SATA drives for blade servers

Western Digital Inc. began shipping the WD VelociRaptor 450 GB and 600 GB SATA drives designed for blade servers, 1U and 2U rack servers, and high-performance PCs and workstations. The 2.5-inch drives spin at 10,000 rpm, support 6 Gbps SATA and have a 32 MB cache. The WD VelociRaptor is also available in an IcePack enclosure -- a 3.5-inch mounting frame with a built-in heat sink -- to keep the drive cool when installed in a 3.5-inch drive chassis. MSRP is $299 for the 450 GB model and $329 for 600 GB.

QNAP adds TS-559 Pro Turbo NAS to Business Series lineup

QNAP Systems Inc. has added the TS-559 Pro, a five-drive desktop model, to its Business Series Turbo NAS lineup. The TS-559 Pro includes up to 10 TB of storage and has been certified as compatible with VMware Inc.'s vSphere 4. The NAS features an Intel Corp. Atom D510 1.66 GHz dual-core processor, 1 Gb of DDR2 RAM, five hot-swappable drives, five USB ports and two e-SATA ports. Advanced features include DOM architecture with fail-safe dual OS.

BDT AG licenses ProStor's RDX technology

ProStor Systems Inc. said tape vendor BDT AG is the latest licensee of its RDX Core removable disk technology. Under the license, BDT will develop and market multi-TB systems based on the RDX removable disk cartridge technology. With RDX Core, licensees can develop standalone solutions or integrate RDX technology into existing systems for applications like storage tiering, data export/transport and offline archiving.

Blu-ray Disc Association announces format enhancements

The Blu-ray Disc Association announced two new media specifications for commercial and consumer applications, the BDXL (High Capacity Recordable and Rewritable discs) and IH-BD (Intra-Hybrid discs). BDXL features write-once options on 100 GB and 128 GB discs, and rewritable options on 100 GB discs. IH-BD incorporates one BD-ROM layer and one BD-RE layer, each with 25 GB of capacity.
